What is decoding?

Decoding describes all of the various strategies readers use to make sense of unfamiliar words in texts. As students progress and prepare for GCSE examinations, reading materials need to provide appropriate challenge and introduce new vocabulary. Many GCSE examiner's reports highlight how students commonly struggle to answer questions in exams as they struggled to read and decode vocabulary within the question. To aid students with this challenge, we are focusing this term on adopting a variety of strategies to help students decode unknown vocabulary and support independent reading.
