Chanbara

Sports Chanbara is a Japanese Sport based on the values of goshindo (a Japanese martial art based on techniques used to train samurai. It incorporates the schools of Karatedo, Aikido, and jujutsu) founded by Tetsundo Tanabe in 1969.The word chanbara in Japanese literature means sword fight. Chanbara is an abbreviated form of chanchan barabara: the first half is mimesis for the sound of swords clash

Tetsundo's group consisted of some of Japan's greatest swordsman. While they were very traditional in nature, they were well aware of today's changing society. Instead of using traditional swords to instruct their pupils, they utilized swords made out of flexible plastic materials and foam like material. It proved to be the safest and most effective method for instructing contact weaponry fighting.

Today, certified Chanbara dojos can be found all around the world. Children and adults alike partake in education and fighting. The founder, Tetsundo, is still a very active participant in the martial art.

Swords

Kodachi (Under 60 cm) about the size of a wooden stick or truncheon.

Choken( Under 100 cm) The choken was at first played either with a single hand or with two hands.

Nito is a two-hand style,

Tanto (under 60cm) A dagger, therefore a player using tanto will try to stab his opponent, also in a tanto match, you can use your hands to stop your opponent's. Kicking is also allowed, but you can't score with a kick.

Long weapons

Jo (128 cm) A short staff also used in aikido and jodo/jojutsu.

Bou(210 cm) It shows its strength in fighting against the choken or nito. It

Yari(210 cm) The Yari is a spear. No other swords have achieved such an exclusive performance as the yari has done. Characterized by its simple and direct power, it used to contribute to battles to a great extent in old times.

Naginata A polearm with a long blade. used to perform slashing as well as thrusting attacks. The sports chanbara version of the naginata has the same overall length as the yari, but has a longer "blade" portion.

Shields

Tate (45cm) The tate is a shield used in a style of fighting known as "tate kodachi" which consists of the tate and a kodachi.

Chanbara has also inspired Samurai movies.
