From this thread, it seems if you purchased gems and were caught by TL's gem trap, you can try contacting Apple (if you are using an iOS device, or the respective companies' of your device) to receive a refund.

Though a response from DaojinWildfire, "A word of caution when requesting refunds, if your account does not have enough Gems/CC to cover the refund, your account may be permanently suspended in order for the refund to be processed."

Hm, seems you (may) get banned for the refund if you don't have enough gems to cover it. So my guess is, if you purchased 50 Gems in Bakery Story, use 24 for appliance trap, ask for a refund when you now only have 26 Gems, that may lead to a ban since you didn't have 50 to "pay'" back TL.

After reviewing the circumstances of your case, we determined that issuing you a refund for your unintentional In-App Purchase is an appropriate exception to the App Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final.

[name censored], you will see a store credit of $5.29 USD in five to seven business days. You may need to sign out of the iTunes Store and then sign back in before you see the credit in your account.

We are glad that we could assist you. It has been our pleasure assisting you in this matter. As you are a valuable part of the Apple iTunes family, it's our foremost priority to solve the issue."

Anonymous1 also wrote backing say "20 gems were not taken away from my account when my money was refunded by apple."

What about something more mundane and a fault of the game and not the user? Here's a user's signature about their contact with TL after loosing gold overnight, twice.

"I lost my coins two nights in the row...my lucky streak! Look on the bright side, I can now confirm that TL will not be reimbursing your lost coins. All the tickets have resulted in two form letters. Don't waste more time opening tickets. Your time is dirt cheap....wait, I paid quite a bit for the dirt in my yard."
