Location
Ransom Twp., Lackawanna Co., PA is located along the Susquehanna River. Before 1849, it was a part of Exeter Twp., Luzerne Co., PA. In 1849, Ransom became a township formed with parts of Exeter Township, Luzerne County and Newton Township, Lackawanna County. It is connected to Luzerne County and is very, very close to Wyoming County.

Before 1849, it was a part of Exeter Twp., Luzerne Co., PA. In 1849, Ransom became a township formed with parts of Exeter Township, Luzerne County and Newton Township, Lackawanna County. Before 1849, it was a part of Exeter Twp., Luzerne Co., PA. It was first settled by the Gardner family in 1769 who were from Connecticut. Ransom was named in honor of Captain Samuel Ransom who raised a company in defense of the Wyoming Valley and fell in the Wyoming Massacre. Many of the people who settled in Ransom were from Connecticut, Sussex County, New Jersey, from Monroe County which was then a part of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and later from Germany. Many of these people had relatives in the neighboring township, Newton Township, Lackawanna Co.
