Annual Catawba Morel Hunt

Post date: Apr 5, 2013 12:00:24 PM

Hello Mushroom Clubbers,

Our annual Catawba Morel Hunt is on the calendar for Sunday April 21st. Last year was such a strange season that we didn't find any Morels. Again, I think this year will be great! The "spot" we go is an incredible place, regardless, full of beautiful wildflowers such as Lady's Slipper and Lily of the Valley!

Catawba Foray, Sunday April 21st 9:00AM

Difficulty:

Moderate-Difficult, total of approx. 4 miles of hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Time Frame:

Expect the foray to take 4 hours

Information:

Please RSVP and let me know your cell phone numbers if you haven't already. We should get reception at the market, though maybe not on the mountain. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, bug spray, brown paper bags for collecting, cameras, sunscreen, and lunch or a snack.

Timeline:

8:00AM: NRV Carpool @ NRV Mall (see below) headed to Orange Market, near Salem.

8:45AM: Orange Market – Citgo: There is a Park and Ride in front of Orange Market where Route 311 and Route 419 intersect. We want to meet here and carpool to the top of the mountain as parking could be limited up there. Exit 141 on 81, then North on Route 419 away from Salem for about 1 mile. Orange Market is on your left at the light. You can grab breakfast or coffee at the Market.

9:00AM: McAfee’s Knob parking lot at the top of Catawba Mountain on Route 311. This is where we’ll start the foray.

NRV Carpooling:

We will have a few people from the NRV who wish to carpool, so we will meet at the New River Valley Mall, in the back of Dicks parking lot, across from the cinema, and near Play it again Sports (where we have met in the past) and figure out who all can ride together--so let me know by email at rebeccahrader@hotmail.com
