New River Valley Mushroom Club

Waiteville, WV Foray

Sun, August 9, 2015, 10am – 2pm

Waiteville, WV 24984, USA (map)

RSVP Requested:  rebeccahrader@hotmail.com

We have done the Waiteville Foray for six years and we’ve walked, collected, and then gotten together with the books to identify several dozen different species of mushrooms each time, including many both photogenic and edible, at this wonderful location.

We will meet at Elke's house and decide how to drive/ride/park to the foray site nearby.

Please RSVP ASAP so we can plan, and know who to look for if they get lost. "Reply All" works well for setting up the carpools. We will have a potluck lunch at Elke and Nick's house and you can also "Reply All" to let us know what you are bringing.

Let me know your cell number as well as a home number or contact person in case of emergency but be advised that your cellphone/GPS may not work in Waiteville.

Bring field guides, bug spray, poncho in case of light rain (we will cancel if a major storm is called for), baskets, collecting bags, and/or tackle boxes (craft boxes) for small specimens, pocket knife, hand lenses, cameras.

Directions (Which I recommend using as a supplement to an actual map or Google Map including Waiteville, WV)

From Southbound I-81:

Take exit 140 for VA-311 toward Salem/New Castle, turn left at VA-311 N/Thompson Memorial Dr.  Continue on VA-311, to stop light near Orange market.  Turn right at stop light continuing on VA-311 toward New Castle, VA about 19 miles.  Continue through New Castle on VA-311 for about 17 miles to Paint Bank, VA.  As you arrive in Paint Bank, you will pass the General Store, which includes the Swinging Bridge Restaurant and the Liberty Gas Station. Turn left onto VA-600.  Go 6.1 miles (you will pass the Hallow Hills Buffalo Farm, before Entering WV) Rt 600 becomes Rt-17 in WV. The Sabia's home is on right.

From Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Floyd, or points south:

Take US 460 West for about 16 miles past Pandapas Pond where we often have walks, (Jefferson National Forest), through Pembroke, to right turn onto VA-635 /Big Stony Creek Road.  You will drive through Pembroke a few miles before the turn.  If you get to Pearisburg/Ripplemead, you missed the turn.  Continue on VA-635 for 5.5 miles, the road makes a sharp left turn to stay on VA-635, (not marked, but look for White Rock Campground sign pointing left over this bridge to know that you are on track). Continue on VA-635, Big Stony Creek Rd for 12 miles.  At the VA-WV state line, VA-635 becomes Rt-17.  Continue on Rt 17 for 11 miles to the Sabia's home on the left.

Elke and Nick Sabia's home:  Brick house, mailbox is across the road from driveway. (Detached Red Garage with Black garage door)

5249 Waiteville Road

Waiteville, WV

304-772-5611

This is "up Stoney Creek" from Pembroke in Giles...about a half hour further from White Rocks/Glen Alton...if anyone ends up driving a carpool without anyone in the car who hasn't been on one of the previous trips, we can talk about specific directions from where you are departing.
