BIRD Garden

Have you noticed the new bat house?  Its located just above the rain garden on a very tall post.  And the area around the rock wall and pathway has been finished with additional shrubs and vines.  These new plantings are included in the plant list.

Access to the BIRD garden is through the glass double doors on the back side of the library.  Seating along the inside wall of glass windows provides the ideal view for watching birds during both winter and summer.  There is outside seating and a couple picnic tables to sit and enjoy a snack as we sometimes do with our school helpers. The design for this area includes a variety of bird friendly shrubs which provide shelter and food for many of our native birds, as well as feeders and birdbath as a water source.  This area is a hot spot for the ecoEXPLORE program.

There's lots of activity in the BIRD garden.  The birds seem to be enjoying the new housing that has been provided.  Part of the yellow chain fencing has been replaced with wrought iron fencing installed to prevent any mishaps down the slope.

Check out the new bird houses that have been installed.  Several different kinds of nesting boxes, which suit a variety of birds.  Additional suet feeders have been installed closer to the windows.  Hummingbird feeders can be found and are frequented during the spring and summer.  They are so much fun to watch.  Have questions about how to sight your bird houses.  Click here for some help with that.

We're looking for a champion for this garden.  Interested in birds, providing shelter and food for them as well as watching their antics?  If that's you, please contact Ed at 828-333-3883

Next summer we'll be developing the slope with bird friendly natives to eliminate the need for maintenance.  These species are listed in our plant guide.
