Walks in 2012

Writing this on Christmas Eve 2012, with many parts of the country flooded, it is hard to believe that it has not been raining all year. Indeed, until sometime in the summer, East Anglia was still (technically) in a drought, and back in January it was bitterly cold for some legs of the Angles Way to Fen Rivers Way link.

We walked from Kings Lynn to Hunstanton (via Sandringham and an excellent B&B in Dersingham) on two consecutive days in March, thus linking the Fen Rivers Way to the Norfolk Coast Path). That completed a circuit around Norfolk from home by way of the Fen Rivers Way, Fen Rivers Way to Norfolk Coast Path link, Norfolk Coast Path, Weavers' Way, Angles Way, Angles Way to Fen Rivers Way link and the Fen Rivers Way again.

We actually re-walked the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path this year, walking the Peddars during September and the Norfolk Coast Path on four consecutive days in October (in contrast to the many short legs when we walked this path in 2006-2007).

Still in East Anglia, in the summer we completed the Stour Valley Path, which runs from Newmarket, though pretty towns and villages on the Suffolk/Essex Border and through classic 'Constable country' to Cattawade.

We started on the Hereward Way in November. This starts close to the Peddars Way and runs to Oakham, but we only got as far as Lakenheath Station (also on the Angles Way to Fen Rivers Way link) before wet weather and too much work brought progress to a temporary halt.

Further afield, we had another wonderful holiday on the South West Coast Path, walking from Plymouth to Teignmouth in May. April and early May had been cold and wet, but it quite literally stopped raining the day before we left home and started again when we were on the train on the way home. We didn't get wet at all, and if anything it was too warm for walking. We took a day our from walking to research Sally's family history in the little Devon town of Modbury. We returned to Teignmouth in rather different weather conditions in December (following landslips onto the railway line between Dawlish and Teignmouth and spent a long weekend of leisurely walking from Teignmouth to Sidmouth.

We also had a wonderful holiday on the Shetland Isles in June. It is very difficult to encapsulate all our memories of Shetland (amazing scenery and wildlife, friendly people, 24-hour daylight) into one photo, but the picture of a puffin at Sumburgh Head makes a good start.

However, the main theme of 2012 has been weddings not walking . Our son Michael married Heather on 5th May and our daughter Helen married Tom on 1st September. It has been quite some year!
