Shouldham Warren to Setchey and back

Saturday 11th February 2006

About 3.5 miles and return

It was grey as we drove to Shouldham Warren, but the sun came out and it turned into a very pleasant afternoon. We followed the Nar Valley Way to the north through the Warren, then over a bridge and along a track, passing a pretty pond with two swans (but impossible to photograph!). We emerged onto the lane that leads to Wormegay Church and turned left (i.e. away from the Church) and into Wormegay Village.

We walked through the village to the remains of the Motte and Bailey (by an attractive house called 'Castle Meadow'). Then, after the bridge, we turned right and followed a bank across farmland to the River Nar. We turned left along the river (not terribly interesting at this stage) and followed it to the A10 at Setchey. There's a very attractive house to the right of the path just as it emerges, but the building on the left, which at first appeared to he impressive, turned out to be an abandonned industrial building of some sort. The attractive garden belongs to the big house ('The Grange') beyond.

We retraced our steps to Shouldham Warren, with beautiful sunlight on everything and we saw an owl between the river and Wormegay. We got back to the car at around 4pm.
