DM FNB Conical

DESCRIPTION

DM-FNB-Conical

UT Deathmatch, Large, 10 - 20 Players. Mixed-gravity Sci-Fi Nebula Gas processing station. June - October 2002

This was the second version of DM-Conical, only "FNB" added to the name to distinguish between the two. This one was larger than the first version, having a huge zoom tube thingy to take players and BOTs for a bit of a ride before spitting them out of the top of the cone.

The large trap door on the cone floor dropped the player into the tube (made up of directional velocity zones with slippery zero-g and kickers to boot you trough the tube.

Windows in the tube at various places kept you aware of where you were in the trip, and of course same as the in the first map you had to try and land on something flat before you gained too much speed in the drop.

The main difference besides the tube was a new section added on - This was the original early form of my DM-BarrelOfFun map - with it's multiple spinning gizmos - mashed in and connected with Concial at several levels.

So this was DM-FNB-Conical-BETA, which I then uploaded to Unreal Playground to get gameplay feedback. The map attracted a bit of attention but more-or-less confirmed my suspicions it was a bit too big for decent deathmatch action.

HISTORY

DM-Conical

UT Deathmatch, Large, 10 - 20 Players. Mixed-gravity Sci-Fi processing station. May 2001

This was a valiant attempt to rescue some of the work I did in the previous map. Still quite large, was essentially the core of "oddity" but with lower half and outsides removed. A large trap door on the cone floor dropped the player into a wide teleporter and spit them out at the top of the cone, to fall down through increasing gravity until they hit something - various platforms, or the floor!

Funny to watch plunging bots splat into gibs! A lot of 2dse, prefabs, deco detail, complete soundwork but rather garish lighting. Finished this one bit by bit over about a year :)

Note: During 2002, I mashed this map together with the original (early form) of my DM-BarrelOfFun map to produce DM-FNB-Conical, which I then uploaded to Unreal Playground as a BETA map to get gameplay feedback. The map attracted a bit of attention but more-or-less confirmed my suspicions it was a bit too big for decent deathmatch action.

DM Space Oddity

UT Deathmatch, Large, 10 - 20 Players. Mixed-gravity orbital space station. April 2001

Large Mixed gravity orbital space station. Someone said "think big, start small". Rather noobishly, I ignored that bit of level-design advice. This map started life a giant spacecraft on a launch pad, but ended up becoming a multi-level gravity zone map. Many rooms, corridors and teleporters were added around a giant cone-shaped hub and the floor was a giant mirror. Circular platforms which exited into surrounding corridors occurred at increasing heights towards the top of the structure as gravity decreased. These corridors emptied into chambers you could fly down into.

The chambers led to large outside area spread out beneath the giant cone structure but on top of a giant inverted multi-level pyramid structure which served as the bottom of the thing. There was a big com-dish thing hanging off to one side. I had these big ideas to add all kinds of junk into the map but after spending a lot of time trying to get some kind of game play going I gave up on the notion - this whole thing was simply way too big and a very ill-conceived idea. ---HOWEVER---

The map was broken up into sections that were used as frameworks for some slightly smaller map layouts: DM Conical, DM Space Junk, and DM Space port. These map "offspring" would go on to be developed into proper maps.
