Educ 763: Instructional Design

During the summer of 2012 I designed the Online Politics and Law class for the Anoka-Hennepin School District. Twelfth-grade students took a one term Politics and Law course, which fulfills a graduation requirement. The course used Moodle. Please, check it out. Fortunately, I was taking "Instructional Design for Online Learning" from UW-Stout, Educ 763, while I was writing the curriculum for Online Politics and Law.

I applied the work from this class directly to the design of Online Politics and Law.

  • I created an outline for the first four modules of the Law class.
  • This outline led to creation of learning guides for the class, including Module 1 and Module 2. Learning guides for all seven modules are on webpages in Moodle.
  • Instructional Design stressed the importance of clear directions for mastering manageable pieces of content. I followed this advice in creating assignments such as a legal terms glossary entry. The assignment also capitalizes on the constructivist possibilities of Moodle as students create a class glossary.
  • Following the glossary assignment students participate in an online forum discussion that I created.
  • I benefited from peer and instructor feedback in creating a syllabus for the class .

I reflected on all of this in the first entry at his new blog, now a node in my personal learning network.
