Earth and Human Activity

ESS3.A - NATURAL RESOURCES

ESS3.B - NATURAL HAZARDS

ESS3.C - HUMAN IMPACTS ON EARTH’S SYSTEMS

ESS3.D - GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE

LEARNING GOAL

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT OUR ACTIONS HAVE IMPACTS AND CONSEQUENCES FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

May 6

Explain natural resources. Be sure to include what they are, renewable vs. nonrenewable, how we extract them from the Earth, the environmental consequences, and technological advances helping their use be more efficient.

May 13

Describe how natural hazards play a role in environmental changes and human activity

May 20

Provide details about how human activities impact the environment

May 27

Research climate change. What are causes and future ramifications to the Earth and humans

CONTENT TO BE INCLUDED -Be COMPLETE and THOROUGH for each component - The Key to each of these is the DEPTH and DETAIL of information provided

Natural Resources:

Types - What are Earth's resources - Renewable and non renewable

Extraction (Industry standards) - how do we get to and remove resources and the consequences of extraction on environment FOR EACH ONE of the following:

Trees, oil(tar sands, offshore drilling, shale oil, fracking), natural gas, water, coal, ores(mining) - include details/pictures, statistics for EACH ONE

Technology advancements replacing fossil fuel use - details for each of the following with pics - use of solar, wind, electric, biofuels(StonyVale farms), algae, geothermal energy, tidal power - include pictures, details and statistics for each one

Natural hazards:

Volcanoes - Historical moments(Mt. Vesuvius, Krakatoa, Mt. St. Helens, + 1 other , and a current event) - pictures - effects on people/land for each one

Earthquakes - Historical moments(Fukushima, San Francisco, Haiti, +1 other) - pictures - effects on people/land for each one

Floods - effects on people/land - pictures - flood of 1987 in Maine - historical event - current event

Hurricanes - Effects on people/land - Katrina, Maria, Harvey, Irma

Wild fire - effects on people/land - pictures - historical event - current event

Human activities impacts on environment - SHOCK AND AWE - Find information that will shock you

Resource depletion - fossil fuels - how much used per day/per year US/globally, when will we run out? what happens then?

Pollution types - air, light, land(landfills (how long do things last), plastics, nuclear waste), water( sewage, plastics, industrial, farm run off (Sebasticook Lake))   -  include MULTIPLE pictures, statistics for EACH TYPE of pollution

Habitat destruction - effects on environment - specific examples- rainforest, tar sands, wetlands - includes pictures along with details

Freshwater supplies - Aquifer(look at Ogallala Aquifer) and - Colorado river 7 states conflict, irrigation, water consumption - how these impact environment - statistics and pictures

Climate change

Climate cycles Earth's history(is current trend natural or man made?) - current trends - earth's average temperature comparison last 1000 years

Industrial revolution - CO2 levels have changed due to this - compare CO2 levels over the last 150 years to where are we now?

Oceans rising - environment and human impacts(coastal cities like Miami, New York, Boston), predictions for year 2100

Glacial melting - Greenland, Antarctica, Mountain regions - rate of change influenced by climate change - pictures/evidence for each

Ocean temps/acidity changes - effects on marine life(Gulf of Maine - lobsters) - coral reefs and what impact their destruction have on ocean -

    pictures/stats

Habitat change - immigration of new life(Maine - ticks, turkeys, green crabs) and loss of life (maple trees in Northeast)

Animal extinction - polar bears, rainforest species(frogs), others here in United States

Future predictions climate change
