Memory Walk 2008

Shanna, Kevin and their parents took part in the Memory Walk to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association on Oct. 26 in Manhattan's Riverside Park. Here is Shanna's report:

This was the first time that we participated in the event and I was so excited to be there. A few weeks before the walk, I created "The Murphy Family" team and began spreading the word about the walk. From the time that we created our team until today (Nov. 3), we have raised a total of $285! Thank you to everyone who donated.

The entire event raised a great amount of money. As of today, the total is over $790,000. They are still counting a lot of the donations so that number can still change.

The walk was great. The forecast originally called for rain but it turned out to be a beautiful day. It was actually the first time that I have been to Riverside Park, as far as I know, and it was a really pretty park right along the river.

After we arrived at the park and signed in, we made our way though the many tables set up with everything from various brochures to breakfast provided by Cosi. We eventually reached the main stage where the the Masters of Ceremonies were speaking. This years Masters of Ceremonies were Bill Ritter from 'Eyewitness News' and Alice Stockton-Rossini from 1010 WINS.

I don't know how many people were there, but you can see from the pictures that there were a lot! Many people walked with their dogs and children dressed up in their Halloween costumes. There were even a few people on stilts and Mr. Met to entertain everyone. Of course, there were also people all along the walk cheering everyone on.

The 2 mile walk went by quickly and before we knew it, we were back where we stared and it was time to go home.

Overall, it was a great experience, and I am looking forward to participating in Memory Walk annual for years to come.

And if anyone still wants to donate...our team's website will be up, running, and accepting online donation until November 30th.

At about 11 AM, the 2 mile walk began with everyone walking under a giant arch made out of purple and white balloons. There was such a huge turnout that around ever bend of the trail you could see endless people walking with us.
