Revelation -- Lesson 5

Chapter 4

Worship of "Our Father Who art in Heaven..."

Hi! Welcome Back! This lesson is going to be a very important and practical one. Revelation Chapter 4 is a key Chapter in the Book of Revelation because it presents and teaches some very basic, foundational, and essential truths.

But, before we look at what it teaches, we need, of course, to read what it says.

So, your first assignment is to read Revelation Chapter 4 and, as you read, put a blue triangle or circle around every occurrence of the word, God (referring to God the Father) and around all the words used in place of the word, God (the Father). Such words would include He, Him, You, One, Someone, Who, You, Your, Lord God Almighty. (These words may not be capitalized in the version of the Bible which you are using, but I am capitalizing them because God is worthy of having ALL references to His name capitalized.) Also, mark the word, Worship (in 4:10), by putting a green circle around the word.

.

**************Pause while you do this assignment*************

Great! I see that you have finished. Now, let's answer some questions.

In ONE WORD, what are the 4 Living Creatures and 24 Elders doing? (4:10) _____________

Yes, they are WORSHIPING God.

God the Father is the One we see here on the throne in Rev. Chapter 4. And, remarkably, there is a very similar passage in Isaiah. Let's look at that now. Isaiah 6:1-4. I have included it for you. But, if you prefer, you may read the passage in your own Bible. Whichever, as you read, here is another assignment for you. As you did before, put a blue triangle or circle around every reference to God or words which are used instead of the word, God (words such as Lord, Lord Almighty, Him, etc.). Ok, here is the passage for you to read and mark.

Isaiah 6:1-4

In the year that King Uzziah (also called Azariah) died, I (Isaiah) saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above Him were seraphs, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

.

Hmmmm. Amazing! Isaiah had this vision in about 740 BC. Some authorities place it closer to 758 BC. But hey, let's not quibble about a few years. The point is how remarkably similar the experiences of Isaiah and John were. And also, the Bible is once again serving as its own commentary because we now know the identification of the 4 Living Creatures.

They are _____________________________ .

.

Yes, they are Seraphs (which are one of the many categories of Angels).

How was God identified and described in this passage in Isaiah? _________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

And how was God described in Revelation 4?

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

Is this the same Person? The same God? (Circle your answer)...........YES................NO

What were the Seraphs saying in the Isaiah passage?

___________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

What were the 4 Living Creatures saying in the Revelation passage? (4:8)

___________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

Are the 4 Seraphs and the 4 Living Creatures the same?..................YES............ NO

So, we see God being Worshiped in both passages. The Isaiah and Revelation passages are the two main places in the Bible which describe God on His throne and God being worshiped in Heaven. But, there are many other places in the Bible where God is praised and worshiped, even though God Himself is not described. Let's look at a few of these many passages. And, (yes, you guessed it), as you read these passages, be sure to put a blue triangle or circle around every "God" word.

Psalms 89:7-8 In the council of the Holy ones God is greatly feared, He is more awesome than all who surround Him. O Lord God Almighty who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

(hmmmmmm. the council of the Holy ones.... could that be referring to the 24 Elders??? hmmmmm. Could the 24 Elders possibly be another category of Angels? Hmmmmm.)

Psalm 103:19-21 The Lord has established His Throne in heaven, and His Kingdom rules over all. Praise the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word. Praise the Lord all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will.

Psalm 104:1-2a Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps Himself in light as with a garment;

(hmmmmmm does that sound a lot like the description of God in Rev. Ch. 4? Yes!)

Habakkuk 2:20 But the Lord is in His holy Temple, let all the earth be silent before Him

.

WORSHIP

Worship! What IS Worship? Well, amazingly, there is no specific place in the Bible where the Worship of God is defined! So, I can't give you the 1,2,3,4 etc. steps as to what worship is or how to worship. But, let's see what we can learn about worship anyway. OK? OK!

And, to find out what a word means, it is always best to start with its definition. So let's do that.

Vines Dictionary defines the several Greek words (verbs) for worship:

PROSKUNEO (Strong's 4352) = an act of homage or reverence, to make obeisance, do reverence to (from pros, towards, and kuneo, to kiss). This is the Greek word used in Rev. 4:10, 5:14, 7:11, ll:16, 19:10 (second part), and 22:9.

SEBOMAI (4576) = to revere, stressing the feeling of awe or devotion...

SEBAZOMAI (4573) = similar to Sebomai and means to honor religiously.

LATRUEO (3000) = to serve, to render religious service or homage, is often translated worship...

EUSEBEO (2151) = to act piously towards....

There are also several noun words for worship but we won't belabor you with those. Since the word most frequently used for worship and the one that is used most in Revelation is the Greek word, PROSKUNEO, a verb (an action word), let's just concentrate on that word in this lesson.

In addition to the definition of PROSKUNEO which you just read from Vine's Dictionary, the BDB/ Thayers lexicon defines this word as ..."to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand". (WOW. What a wonderful definition!) BDB/Thayers also says that Worship (Proskuneo) is "1. to kiss the hand to (toward) one, in token of reverence; 2. ...to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence; 3. ...kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication. (It is also) used of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank (such as) to the Jewish high priests, to God, to Christ, to heavenly beings, to demons."

Now, based on what you just read about the definition of the word, Worship (Proskuneo), briefly define WORSHIP in your own words.

WORSHIP is __________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________

Who or what is / are often worshiped by various people? From the choices listed below, circle ALL the persons or things that have been worshiped (whether rightly or wrongly) in the past or are now being worshiped or that will be worshiped in the future.

.

God The Father......Jesus Christ.....Angels....Idols....demons.......Satan.......Stars.....Sun.....Moon....Earth

Mother Earth.......Mother Nature....Trees.....Money....Career.......Friends....Husband.......Wife.....Children

Things (cars, house, etc)......Buddha........Baal............Mohammed...........Spirit Guides..........etc.

Hmmmmm. Very interesting! Yes, some people DO worship God... but MANY people do not worship God but INSTEAD worship other men, idols, things, careers, demons --actually ALL of the things in that list and MORE! (So, I assume that you also correctly circled the word, etc.)

And this is a very important point. Because, if you will recall, as you read the book of Revelation, you saw that there were many people who refused to worship God and instead of worshiping God, continued to worship idols, the Antichrist and etc. And we also saw the serious consequences, as related in the Trumpets and the Bowls (Plagues), that happen to those who worship anyone or anything OTHER than the Holy God Hmmmm.

But, what does God say about Worship and concerning Who is to be worshiped? Can we worship anyone or anything that we desire? Does God care who or what we worship? Well, let's look at some scriptures and see what God says. There are more than 100 verses in the Old and New Testament relating to Worship. We will, of course, not look at all of them. But we will look at several that are representative of what God thinks about Whom you and I and all mankind should Worship and why and how.

As you read these verses, as before, mark every reference to God by putting a blue triangle or circle around the God word. Also, every time you see the word, Worship, put a green circle around the word. (Note: There will not always be the actual word, worship, in these verses, but it will be apparent that Worshiping and Obeying God is what is being referred to. So, not to worry, if you don't see the actual word, worship, in every single Scripture passage you will be reading and marking .)

We'll begin our reading and marking with the (gasp!) 10 Commandments! Since most people today don't know them or rarely even see or hear these commandments, I am going to include all 10 of them all in this section, even though they don't all refer to worship. However, they all DO help explain WHY the events in the Book of Revelation occur and WHY God will pour out His wrath upon the earth. So listen up! And pay attention! If ANY of the 10 Commandments are broken, there is punishment for the breakers! A word to the wise....

.

The 10 Commandments ---Exodus 20:2-17 (NIV)

(Also repeated in Deuteronomy 5:6-21)

(Remember to mark the God words and the Worship words as you read these scriptures.)

(1) You shall have no other gods before Me.

(2) You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and forth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to thousands who love Me and keep My commandments.

(3) You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.

(4) Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, or your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

(5) Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

(6) You shall not murder.

(7) You shall not commit adultery.

(8) You shall not steal.

(9) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

(10) You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

.

Wow!... those are THE 10 Commandments! Have you broken any of them???? YES! What happens to a person ... to you? to me? who breaks one or more of these commandments? Can an unrepentant person break (disobey) these commandments and still dwell with God in His heaven and worship Him? NO! Why? Because God is a Holy God. (Remember what the 4 Living Creatures, the Seraphs, said.) And a Holy God can NOT look at, tolerate, or abide with sin! Therefore, a breaker of one or more of the 10 commandments is destined to endure hell, and, if living at the time of the punishments which are described in the Book of Revelation, those too! Oh NO! Oh YES!

But, Good News! Great News! There IS a remedy! There is a cure! There is a way to be forgiven and to be restored to fellowship with God and to be able to dwell with Him forever in His heaven.

That remedy is to accept the free gift of Jesus' substitutionary death to pay the penalty for sin. Yes, Jesus paid the sin death penalty for us. Jesus died in my place and in your place. He died to pay the penalty for my sin and for your sin. So, IF (and that is the condition...IF) you will repent of all the sin(s) you have committed and IF you confess your sin(s) to God and IF you accept the gift of Jesus' death, when He was sacrificed on the cross as a substitute for you, and IF you will make Him the Lord of your life and will turn from your sinful ways and obey and worship and serve Him, THEN, you will be forgiven and will be restored to fellowship with God the Father and will be able to enter the door (Jesus is the door, no one comes to the Father except through Jesus) of heaven and live with God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit and their angels and all the other believers forever! Wow!

But, if you don't turn from your sin and if you don't accept the free gift of Jesus' substitutionary death and if you don't make the Resurrected Jesus the Lord of your life, THEN you will experience the punishments described in the Book of Revelation and eternity in Hell. It is your choice! "Choose you this day whom you will serve...." That is the message of the Bible. That is the message of the Book of Revelation. Choose God and Worship God and live eternally with Him in Heaven! Choose the devil and Worship the devil and spend eternity in Hell!

It is your choice! No one can make this choice for you! You alone! I pray that you will choose wisely!

But, let's continue on.

Let's read some more scriptures in the Bible which tell us what God says concerning Worship and WHO is to be worshiped and How and Why. And, as before, as you read, mark all the God words by putting a Blue triangle or circle around the Word and put a Green circle around the word, Worship (worshiped, worshiping, etc).

.

.

WORSHIP -- What does God say about Worship?

Deut. 4:19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars -- all the heavenly array -- do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.

Deut. 8:19-20 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I (God) testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.

.

By the way, you are no doubt noticing that many times the word, LORD is written in all capital letters. Why? Does this mean something important? YES! This difference is because there are 2 ways to write that word based upon what that word is translating from the original Hebrew. The 2 main Hebrew words for "Lord" are YHWH, which is written as LORD, when translated into English, and Adonai, which is translated into English by using small letters, Lord. When both of these words are used together as a compound name for God, they are not written "LORD Lord," but are translated as "Sovereign LORD." Also, the Hebrew phrase "the LORD of hosts' is translated as "the LORD Almighty" and "God of hosts" is translated as "God Almighty." So now you know.

And, now that you know, and with this in mind, let's continue on with our reading and marking of the following verses which tell us much about Worship.

.

Deut. 11:16-17a Be careful or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, ...

Deut. 30:17-18a But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I (God) declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed...

I Kings 9:6-7a But if you or your sons turn away from Me and do not observe the commands and decrees I (God) have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for My Name. ...

I Kings 12:28-30 ...the King (Jeroboam) made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." One, he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people went even as far as Dan to worship the one (golden calf) there.

2 Kings 17:35-41a When the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites, He commanded them: "Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them. But the LORD, Who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, is the One you must worship. To Him you shall bow down and to Him offer sacrifices. You must always be careful to keep the decrees and ordinances, the laws and the commands He wrote for you. Do not forget the covenant I have made with you , and do not worship other gods. Rather, worship the LORD your God; it is He Who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies." They would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices.Even while these people were worshiping the LORD, they were serving their idols. ...

I Chronicles 16:29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name. Bring an offering and come before Him; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.

2 Chronicles 7:19-20a But if you turn away and forsake the decrees and commands I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot Israel from My land...and will reject this temple...

2 Chronicles 20:18 Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the LORD.

Psalm 29:2 Ascribe (Give) to the LORD the glory due His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.

Ps 81:9 You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not bow down to (worship) an alien god.

Ps 95:7-8a Come let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts...

Ps. 96:9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness; tremble (in reverent awe, equivalent to "fear") before Him, all the earth.

Ps. 97:6-7 The heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory. All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols -- worship Him, all you gods!

Ps. 95:5 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His footstool; He is holy.

Psalm 2:11-12 Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for His wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him.

Ps. 99:9 exalt the LORD our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

Ps. 132:7 Let us go to His dwelling place, let us worship at His footstool --

Ps 138:1-2 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the "gods" I will sing your praise. I will bow

down toward Your holy temple and will praise Your name for Your love and your faithfulness, for You have

exalted above all things Your name and Your word.

Isaiah 2:7-9 Their land is full of silver and gold; there is no end to their treasures. Their land is full of horses; there is no end to their chariots. Their land is full of idols; they bow down (worship) to the work of their hands, to what their fingers have made. So man will be brought low and mankind humbled -- do not forgive them.

Isa 2:20-21 In that day men will throw away to the rodents and bats their idols of silver and idols of gold which they made to worship, They will flee to the caverns in the rocks and to the overhanging crags from the dread of the LORD and the splendor of His majesty when He rises to shake the earth.

Isa. 27:13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.

Jeremiah 13:10 These wicked people, who refuse to listen to My words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt -- completely useless.

Jer. 25:6-7 "Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not provoke Me to anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you. But you did not listen to Me," declares the LORD, "and you have provoked Me with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves."

Jer 44:19 The women added, "When we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven, and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our husbands know that we were making cakes like her image and pouring out drink offerings to her?

Daniel 3:16-18 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."

Dan. 3:26b-28 So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then, Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Who has sent His angel and rescued His servants! They trusted in Him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.

Acts 7:41-42a That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made. But God turned away and gave them over to the worship of the heavenly bodies. ...

Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took Him (Jesus) to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All of this I will give You," he said, "if You will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the LORD your God, and serve Him only.'"

John 4:19-26 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that You (Jesus) are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." Jesus declared, "Believe Me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship in Spirit and in truth." The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us." Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am He."

Romans 12:1 I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual worship.

.

Well, there you have it, a FEW of the MANY passages in the Bible which give us much insight and

information concerning WORSHIP.

To Worship is, as you have observed, is to show honor, respect, reverent devotion to, and allegiance to a person or thing. In fact, our English word, Worship, actually comes from the old English word, "worthship" which, as you can see by the word itself, means that the one receiving the honor, adoration, veneration, or devotion is "worthy" of such devotion and honor.

When a person worships some one or some thing, he or she pays divine honor and adoration to that person or thing and venerates it.

In Chapter 4 of Revelation, we saw God the Father being worshiped by the 4 Living Creatures and the 24 Elders.

In the many Scriptures which you read and marked, we saw many things and gods being worshiped. But, we also saw that there is ONE and only ONE Who is worthy of worship!

And that ONE is: ____________________________________________ .

Yes, Only God, the Creator of the Universe, the Ruler of all mankind, the God we see described in Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4 is worthy of worship and praise and honor and service and unquestioning obedience.

Why is it important that you choose to worship this ONE God only? You have read many scripture passages that speak of the consequences of refusing to worship the LORD God!

Now, reread those verses which you have read and marked and, as you read, UNDERLINE in BLACK the CONSEQUENCES that The One and Only God has said will happen to those who refuse to Worship, Obey, and Serve HIM.

.

.

************pause while you do this***********

Ok! I see you are back. Pretty awesome wasn't it! God is definitely a jealous God and will have NO other gods before Him. He said and implied that repeatedly when He said such things as: "You shall have NO other gods before me," "You shall worship the LORD your God and Him only shall you serve..."

What are some of the consequences that you read that will happen to those who refuse to Worship and serve and obey the LORD God! List a FEW of them in the space below:

Do you seen now WHY the awesome and horrible events, that occur in the 7 Trumpets and the 7 Bowls during the time of the outpouring of the wrath of God, MUST occur? Do you see that, in them, God is keeping His promised warnings that He will PUNISH those who refuse to acknowledge Him as their LORD and God and continue to serve and obey other gods and continue to disobey Him and break His commandments?

YES! Of course. It all makes sense. God is a God of love and He does want people to repent of their sins and to return to Him and to obey Him and serve Him and live with Him forever in eternal happiness and joy and peace. IF they do repent and IF they do make Him their God and serve Him only, He WILL FORGIVE them.

BUT, God is also a God of justice and, therefore, MUST and WILL repay those who refuse to repent and to obey Him. He has to repay. Otherwise, God would not be a God of Justice. He cannot and will not let those who refuse to obey Him get away with their disobedience, with their sins, with the evil things they have done to others.

So, either a person will Worship and serve and obey the ONE and ONLY God or they will worship and serve and obey a false god, (an idol, things, or even the Antichrist.)

Yes, the entire Book of Revelation and indeed the entire Bible, is about God, and serving, obeying, and WORSHIPING HIM ONLY! As you read these following closing verses in our lesson, mark the God words and the Worship words.

.

.

.

Psalm 33:8 Let all the earth fear (have a holy and reverential awe of) the Lord; let all the people of the world revere Him.

Psalm 119:19-20 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. This (Jesus) is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter.

Psalm 100 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is He Who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

.

.

"Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve."

In Revelation, Chapter 4, we observed the Worship of the One True God by the 24 Elders and the 4 Living Creatures (Seraphs). He is their God! They worship and serve Him.

Is He your God? Do you, will you also, worship and serve Him? This is the bottom line of the book of Revelation. To Whom will you bow your knee? To God or to the Devil. The book of Revelation chronicles what happens to each group.

.

"Choose you this day whom you will serve......"

Either you will worship God or you will worship the Devil.

There is no other option.

As we go through the rest of this study of Revelation,

keep that in mind.
