Jerome R. Ernst FAIA

Jerome R. Ernst FAIA, FAICP (1942-2020) (UW BArch 1965, MUrbP 1967) clearly ranks in the top echelon of the nation's urban designers.
A self-employed urban design consultant and a principal at NBBJ 1997-2000, he previously led TRA's urban design division.  Plans and projects throughout the Puget Sound region, nationwide, and around the globe benefited from his skill and leadership.  Through involvement in AIA urban design programs at all levels and as a participant in R/UDAT (Regional/Urban Design Assistance Teams) activities in key cities, Jerry Ernst had a major influence on the development of the profession and practice of urban design.  A wide range of public service activities extended this influence to other disciplines and businesses, and throughout the public realm.  He advised generations of mayors and community leaders, and brought his credible vision to plans of major significance including the Seattle Center Master Plan in 1990, the King County Regional Justice Center in 1996, and the Bellingham Waterfront in 2004.   Jerry proudly hailed from West Seattle.

Jerry Ernst served as AIA Seattle President in 1986.  AIA Seattle Medallist Phil Jacobson FAIA sponsored his nomination to the AIA College of Fellows, which resulted in his 1991 induction.
