James R. Merritt FAIA

James R. Merritt FAIA (BArch UW 1970), a Tacoma native, bought a run-down building in Tacoma in 1979 where he established his practice.  With a range of partners over the years, his projects with Merritt Architecture have included the Tacoma Union Station -- the building housing the Federal Court House and including a Dale Chihuly exhibit.

Jim has also played an active role with the Downtown Tacoma Association, instrumental in the initiation of the Tacoma renaissance.  In 2009 and 2016 he initiated campaigns for Mayor of Tacoma, and briefly in 2012 undertook a campaign for election to the Washington State Legislature.

His service with AIA SW Washington included a 2002 term as President.
