Program Description:
Our 2023 Summer internship program provides high school students ages 14 - 18 an opportunity to learn about architectural design and other industry-related skills. Through our program, high school students will have the chance to engage with professionals from architecture and other design fields. They will also have the opportunity to visit design firms and schools while learning about skills architects use in the industry. Each program tackles a design
challenge from varying community partners and other non-profits.
This summer Boston Global Investors will be hosting a Youth Design Competition at 10 World Trade. Students participating in summer programs with local design education organizations will be invited to participate in a six-week paid program and design mobile creative kiosks that will be used in the future by nonprofit arts organizations on site. Students will be encouraged to build skills in software aided design, public speaking, and more.

OUR THEME
This year's theme is "Lineage and Time Travel: The Beautiful Collision." We will be honoring, remembering, revisiting, celebrating, and amplifying QTBIPOC stories to fight erasure and cultural amnesia.
DATES/CRITERIA
The 3-week Summer Intensive will be fully in-person starting July 31 - August 25, 2023. To be eligible, youth need to be a LGBTQIA+ youth or ally between the ages of 14-18. We are accepting eight (8) ensemble spots during this intensive. Youth will be compensated for their time and participation, as well as receive virtual grubhub gift cards for the dates involved. Applications will be accepted based on information entered in the application and first come first serve basis. Applications are due by June 30th, 2023. AM Youth Summer Employment
The Academic Mentoring Dept. will be hosting a summer job site for youth. Youth will learn about Mentorship, Peer Leadership, while getting paid. This fun and interactive position will be the beginning of having more student involvement in our year-round program and decision making.

TAG | ALERTA
We are glad to share that the TAG | ALERTA summer application is available now! This Summer we plan to offer students ELA, STEM, Arts, Sports, field trips and more. TAG | ALERTA's goal is to support Latinx, multilingual and multicultural students through project-based classroom practices and a learning environment that fosters students' cultural pride, civic engagement, and leadership skills. Requirements: Current 5th - 9th grade student, proof of Covid-19 vaccination (Please reach out to us for more information if any of your students are not vaccinated), current Boston resident.

Transportation: We do not offer transportation, but we are accessible via MBTA Red Line JFK/UMass Station and Buses #8, #16, and #41 that also stop at JFK/UMass Station and there students can take the free shuttle #1 that drops them off at Campus Center.
Lunch: We provide FREE lunch and snacks to all students, but students are welcome to bring their own if they prefer.

Fresh Films
Teens 14 - 18 can get paid to build film skills and make movies this summer! Starting July 10th, teens will meet Monday - Friday for 5 weeks at Charlestown High School as they learn the ins and outs of filmmaking while creating film projects! In the Fresh Films Paid Boston Summer Film program, teens will get hands-on experience using professional film equipment including cameras, boom mics, lighting and audio recording. Plus, under the guidance of industry pros, teens will be fully immersed in the pre-production, production AND post-production process of filmmaking!

This 6-week program is open to all currently enrolled Boston Public School females (and anyone who identifies as female) in grades 7-12. This program provides a full fitness assessment, instruction and exercise designed to prevent injuries, strength training and confidence building. The program will be led by athletic trainers, physical therapists and BPS coaches.
Applications for Boston PIC summer internships are still being accepted on a rolling basis.
The PIC targets students in their Junior or Senior year and students must be 16 years. Sophomores who are 16 and older and have had previous employment are also encouraged to apply.
Jóvenes en Acción (JEA) program.
It’s that time of year again, where we begin to set our eyes on the upcoming summer. As y’all are getting through this 4th quarter we wanted to share a couple of summer opportunities for your students.
We want to start off with a huge thank you to all of you that have shared our Jóvenes en Acción (JEA) program. Our Summer paid JEA opportunity opened up and we have gotten a huge amount of applications. If you have any student that is looking for a summer program where they can:
Train in Dance, Music, or Theatre within Afro-Latin styles and traditions
Take workshops that aid in College/Career Exploration & Civic Engagement and Cultural District work
Have Friday field trips to colleges and other great artistic and cultural experiences in the Greater Boston area.
Please send them our application link soon. I’ll attach our flyer and information sheet as well. We are close to being full, but have an active waitlist. If you have any student you assisted with an application and would like to know their status please reach out. I would be happy to share where they are in our process.
Regardless of whether your students are able to get into JEA, or not, we want to share about all the other amazing summer paid opportunities here in Boston! I’m sure you know about the Successlink Jobs, but this year there have been a lot of changes. We are hoping it makes the youth application process, especially for non-profit organizations, simpler! Check out their website here to see all the different opportunities.
There should also be a number of neighborhood fairs coming up where youth could go and potentially get offered a job onsite! Keep an eye out for the events update on the Successlink website.
Paid ICA Student Opportunities
Summer 2023:
Teen Digital Cooperative (TDC) is a paid media production program that equips teens with photography and video production skills while empowering them to connect with their communities. TDC meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:00 - 4:00 PM from 7/10/23 - 8/4/2023. Applicants should apply by 5/14 here!
Fall 2023:
Teen Exhibitions Program (TEP) is a paid group of teens that work together to plan, curate, and install artwork in the ICA Teen Gallery located at the ICA’s Seaport Studio just two blocks from the ICA. TEP organizes two exhibitions a year to amplify teen art and invites teens in Boston and beyond to engage with the artwork. TEP meets on from, from Fridays from 4:00-7:00 PM, from 8/8/23 - 6/14/24, plus additional dates. Applicants should apply by 5/10 here!
Teen Arts Council (TAC) is a paid group of teens with the goal of addressing social issues, introducing teens to the ICA and art in general. TAC organizes events throughout the year to connect with teens. This includes Teen Night, a night of artmaking and youth performances, and The Current, an event focusing on socio-political issues affecting teens in Boston. TAC meets on Thursdays from 4-7pm, from 8/7/23 - 6/13/24. Applicants should apply by 5/10 here!
3PointFoundation Summer Academy for Boston middle school students.
The 3PointFoundation has been working in afterschool programs for the past 10 years in partnership with teachers and administrators to bring our students project based learning but more importantly to connect with kids to help them as they grow into young leaders.
We also provide a Summer Academy at 3 different locations for 5 weeks in the summer. The Summer Academy is an amazing opportunity for Boston students to get 21st Century Skills, develop a growth mindset, connect with other students and peer role models, and have a memorable and life changing experience.

New Grading Policy Key Highlights
Last year the School Site Council voted on the Grading and Assessment Policy. This policy was created with input from many stakeholders and will continue to be highlighted in our weekly memo’s. As part of the feedback there are a few really important shifts to be shared.
Under the new grading the following is the expectation:
Homework over school vacation periods will be limited to two subjects and homework should be designed to take 30 minutes or less. There will be no long-term project or large assignments will be assigned over school vacation weeks. *AP courses and summer reading assignments are an exception to this rule:
February break: Science and ELA
April break: Latin and Modern Foreign Language
Upon our return we will begin preparing for Midterms and completing MAP Assessments. Here is what was decided in regards to Midterms and Finals:
Mid-Year and Final Exams
Final and Mid-Year exams will contribute to the final course grade. Each exam will count as a summative assessment grade in either term 2 or term 4.
Mid-Year shall be a cumulative summative assessment that assesses what students have learned over the course of the first semester. Mid-year shall be aligned to the standards or course outcomes.
After reviewing the mid-year exam, teachers shall review the data and create appropriate action plans

For students who have failing grades at the progress report period, teachers shall call home and communicate feedback to caregivers that outlines why the student is not demonstrating mastery and comment on the progress report
For students receiving Ds at progress report period, the teacher shall input a comment on the progress report that explains why the student is receiving.
That communication shall be logged in SIS.
Massachusetts is moving toward an "access for all" model in which anyone with any presenting issue can access mental health services reliably. To that end, here's the states "Roadmap" as well as CBHC programs and an important resource for LGBTQ teens/youths:

BLU Foundation: Making medical and mental health awareness a priority while uplifting voices of LGBTQ+ folks. They have wrap-around services for ages 17-24, classes on how to make healthy meals for less money and a successful trans men's zoom group.

Please remember that we are still strongly recommending students mask up and stay home if they are feeling sick. Please reference my messaging last week particularly these points:
Wash your hands–Perform frequent hand washing and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Don’t come to school if you’re sick–use our home health checklist to monitor your symptoms.
Get vaccinated and boosted! Visit the City of Boston’s Vaccine Clinics or your medical provider.
Wear your mask indoors! Wearing your mask is always a safe bet!
Use your free Covid-19 rapid test before you go to school–Use the free rapid antigen test provided to each student. Test even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms.
Call your student’s school to report a Covid-19 positive case–If your student tests positive for Covid-19, please report it immediately.
Refrain from sharing food and/or drinks with others.
TRANSPORTATION UPDATES & SAFETY
Please have your child ready for the bus at their assigned pickup location ten minutes before the stated pickup time. Please also be prepared for bus delays. If you would like to know where your child’s bus is in real time, check out Where’s My School Bus online at schoolbus.bostonpublicschools.org.
If your child needs way-finding help, please encourage them to call the BPS Transportation Helpline at 617-635-9520. If your child becomes lost, they should call 9-1-1. The Boston Police Department's school unit coordinates with Boston Public Schools to locate missing children and return them to their parents and/or guardians or school as quickly as possible.

Please avoid blocking traffic by stopping in the middle of the road, parking in the spots designated for buses, making U-turns and dropping students off in the teacher parking lots.

Boston Partners in Education
Boston Partners in Education will match academic mentors with your students to support them 1:1 or in small groups. Our mentors come directly to your classroom for 1 hour each week, for the duration of the school year. Students that may benefit from working with a mentor might: need additional time to understand concepts, lack confidence or motivation in certain subjects, need help following through to complete work, or need stronger organizational and study skills. Boston Public School High Schools,
SAIL is a unique leadership program for high school students to engage with successful leaders and organizations through interactive workshops and a trip to Israel, an international hub of discovery and innovation. The deadline is rapidly approaching, and we are looking for you as leaders of your schools to nominate up to two student leaders to apply to SAIL. Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math Science
Federally funded TRIO programs that provide academic support to low-income and first-generation college bound students. To qualify, students must have at least started the ninth grade and attend one of the program’s target high schools that include the Boston Green Academy, Charlestown HS, Josiah Quincy Upper School., Margarita Muniz Academy, Community Academy of Science and Health, Brighton HS, The English HS, Snowden International School or attend a public school and live in one of the program’s target neighborhoods of Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan and Roxbury.
Upward Bound is a part of the federally funded TRIO program that provides academic support to low-income and first-generation college bound students. To qualify, students need to either meet TRIO low-income guidelines or be first-generation college, meaning neither parent has obtained a bachelor’s degree. Additionally, to qualify, students must have at least started the ninth grade and will attend one of the program’s target high schools that include the Margarita Muniz Academy, Community Academy of Science and Health, Brighton, English, Snowden or attend a public school and live in one of the program’s target neighborhoods of Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan and Roxbury. Students attending a target high school are given priority in the admission process.
Boston University Upward Bound is a college preparatory program that is a part of the Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development’s College Access and Student Success Office. In addition to Upward Bound, the office also hosts Upward Bound Math Science.
ABCD Summer Works & Work SMART Youth Employment
In Youth Services, we provide opportunities for career exposure for youth between the ages of 14 - 24 years old by providing a meaningful work experience through our partners. *Note, youth wages are paid by ABCD.
Our in-school program, WorkSMART, youth are between the ages of 14 - 21 years old who reside in Boston and Medford. Youth are provided an 8 week paid internship (1 week of workshops for soft skills development followed by a 7 week internship at a worksite placement for 8 hours per week). In addition, youth are able to participate in mentoring and tutoring sessions.
During SummerWorks, youth take part in career skills and job readiness workshops, receive mentoring and social support, and be placed in a job that gives back to the community, all while earning a paycheck.
SummerWorks is open to income eligible Boston and medford residents age 14 to 21
Engages youth across the country for opportunities in the music industry. Last summer, we launched our inaugural Boston internship program for recent high school grads. For 6 weeks, I had the pleasure of overseeing students from various Boston Public Schools as they immersed themselves in the live music industry and learned important career development skills.
We are excited for the second year of this program, and I wanted to share with you information and the application in the hopes you'd be able to disperse among your own students as they begin to explore opportunities beyond high school. The application is rolling, with a closing date of May 31.
Additionally, Music Forward offers a free program for high school juniors and seniors to tour local music venues and learn more about the behind-the-scenes of the live entertainment world. We have several partner venues, including the House of Blues and Citizens Opera House, that will be happy to host BLA students this spring for a site visit. These tours are usually 1-2 hours, Mon-Wed, during school hours (11am-2pm). You can learn more here, and register today for upcoming dates. Saturday School
Saturday school serves as a space where our students engage in activities they may not get to experience during the school day or week, and often features members of the community. Monday After-School Math Club for Grade-7 & Grade-8 Math Enthusiasts
Join Seniors Kenny Mai & Symone Armstead on Mondays at 1:40 to 2:40 in Room 326 for fun & interesting math activities. Students will work on group problem solving, hands-on explorations, team competitions, and maybe create a Math Video or Animation Video for the MathCounts Video Challenge annual contest.
