STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Back to School 2021: Parenting Through Grief and Loss

In response to a survey sent to BPS families in March 2020, parents and caregivers requested practical tips around social, emotional and behavioral development. In response, we have been sending these Wellbeing Digests! You can sign up here if you are seeking ways to support your child's behavioral, social and emotional development.

Invest in Girls

We love working with your students to help them learn the basics of personal money management in preparation for their eventual financial independence! We’ve noticed that many students express interest in a more imminent concern: How do they approach paying for college? We think that looking at college through a financial lens is tremendously important, and so we have organized a webinar in two parts with Julie Shields-Rutyna, the Director of College Planning, Education, and Training at MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority), to provide her expertise. (yes, young men are allowed to attend this one!)

Spring Workshop: (Scheduled for March 24th at 7 pm EST via Zoom – Registration will open in late February.)

  • Comparing financial packages: Once you have your offers, how do you compare them?

  • Understanding Educational Loans: What types of loans exist? What are the requirements? What are the advantages/disadvantages of different kinds?

CALLING ALL 10th GRADERS- Apply for SUMMER SEARCH!

Summer Search Boston – a student centered organization on a mission to help young people expand what they believe is possible for themselves.

Summer Search’s overarching goal has long been to help young people graduate from high school, matriculate to a post-secondary education and successfully earn a 4-year college degree within six years. Their services include:

1) Year-round mentoring by full-time, professional staff who encourage students to reflect on their experiences to better understand themselves and to prepare for their futures.

2) Two summer enrichment experiences for high schoolers (wilderness experience, international service trips, pre-college academic programs, or internships) that put students into highly challenging, unfamiliar environments.

3) Support and advice for high school seniors as they plan for and transition to college or another post-secondary pathway.

4) Continued mentoring as needed, connections to internships and career coaching for up to six years after high school.

  • You can view our updated student video here: https://bit.ly/3k1etcN

    • With subtitles in 3 languages

  • Online application is open: https://www.summersearch.org/apply

    • Note: There are two parts to the application. Students have a section they will need to fill out, sign and submit. Once their part of the application is complete, a link will automatically be sent to the parent/guardian whose contact information they provided. Parent(s)/guardian(s) will need to fill out the second half of the application, upload income documentation then sign and submit.
