BLA SPOTLIGHT of the WEEK

We are officially back from break. Hopefully the break was enjoyable and allowed you all to stand back and relax. 2021 has been an eventful year with covid continuing and coming back to fully in-person learning. Though the school year has been full of trials and tribulations, we are glad to see that most students have found a sense of normality within these walls. We take this time to acknowledge all the wonderful moments that students and teachers have taken a part in. We hope that you continue to be the creative and smart students we know that you are and can't wait to see the wonderful things you take part in this year. Keep growing and keep learning!

INVEST IN GIRLS EXPLORING FINANCE PROGRAM FOR WINTER TERM

The Exploring Finance Program is Invest in Girls’ Career Exploration program. We have offered it as part of our nation-wide online afterschool program, but in our winter term, we are hoping to gather a cohort exclusively for Boston-area students.

Who: Female-identifying 10th-12th graders who have some done some prior financial literacy workshops with IIG or courses at their school.

By the end of the program, students will be able to differentiate between the broad categories of finance (investment banking, corporate finance etc), as well as gauge their interest in specific careers by participating in activities and reflecting on their skills. The program will also connect them with current professionals who will become a part of their network as they move onto college and beyond.

Back to School 2021: Parenting Through Grief and Loss

In response to a survey sent to BPS families in March 2020, parents and caregivers requested practical tips around social, emotional and behavioral development. In response, we have been sending these Wellbeing Digests! You can sign up here if you are seeking ways to support your child's behavioral, social and emotional development.

Invest in Girls

We love working with your students to help them learn the basics of personal money management in preparation for their eventual financial independence! We’ve noticed that many students express interest in a more imminent concern: How do they approach paying for college? We think that looking at college through a financial lens is tremendously important, and so we have organized a webinar in two parts with Julie Shields-Rutyna, the Director of College Planning, Education, and Training at MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority), to provide her expertise. (yes, young men are allowed to attend this one!)

Spring Workshop: (Scheduled for March 24th at 7 pm EST via Zoom – Registration will open in late February.)

  • Comparing financial packages: Once you have your offers, how do you compare them?

  • Understanding Educational Loans: What types of loans exist? What are the requirements? What are the advantages/disadvantages of different kinds?

CALLING ALL 10th GRADERS- Apply for SUMMER SEARCH!

Summer Search Boston – a student centered organization on a mission to help young people expand what they believe is possible for themselves.

Summer Search’s overarching goal has long been to help young people graduate from high school, matriculate to a post-secondary education and successfully earn a 4-year college degree within six years. Their services include:

1) Year-round mentoring by full-time, professional staff who encourage students to reflect on their experiences to better understand themselves and to prepare for their futures.

2) Two summer enrichment experiences for high schoolers (wilderness experience, international service trips, pre-college academic programs, or internships) that put students into highly challenging, unfamiliar environments.

3) Support and advice for high school seniors as they plan for and transition to college or another post-secondary pathway.

4) Continued mentoring as needed, connections to internships and career coaching for up to six years after high school.

  • Online application is open: https://www.summersearch.org/apply

    • Note: There are two parts to the application. Students have a section they will need to fill out, sign and submit. Once their part of the application is complete, a link will automatically be sent to the parent/guardian whose contact information they provided. Parent(s)/guardian(s) will need to fill out the second half of the application, upload income documentation then sign and submit.

Applications for SMASH Northeastern are officially open and we will be IN PERSON this Summer (conditions permitting). APPLY here www.smash.org/apply. The deadline to apply will be March 1st, 2022. If you want more information, please contact Ms. White, mwhite8@bostonpublicschools.org
