Mah Camara

Quotation Author: Dorothy Height

Quotation: I want to be remembered as one who tried

She got up

And she crawled

And she stood

And she stumbled

And she moved until she could walk

And when she mastered walking

She decided she would run

And run she shall.

Run til she can’t run no more

Run til she fell

Repeat.

She said she wanted to be remembered as one who tried

So she dug her foot into the ground until the soil spoke back in enchantments

It painted her mind of visions

Glorious as they come

They spoke of wealth and prosperity

In our tongue

In our culture

In the song they gave to our hearts

And before she knew it she could dance

First one then two

Then six then seven

One.

Six.

Seven.

She sought for a home

And in her feet she planted roots

A growth of new people with feet that beat

And they danced under the sun soaking up its heats

Allowing their hair to rise

And their voices to carry

They populated like trees

Giving life

Breath

Meaning

to everyone.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Black History Month Expressions Contest Winners: Mah Camara,

“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” —Ida B. Wells

… what?

our skin tint

like lint

glued to us

forcing generations of affliction upon us

Even though we did not pick the cotton

get beaten so bloody that our skin

would start rotten

doesn't mean our ancestors should

be forgotten

however gruesome

these words are truthsome

modern day slavery

turning the entire world angry.

black men put into cells

meant to be their own personal hell.

pre-made for them at a young age

Preparing them to disengage.

hold in rage.

while being confined to their tiny cage.

we choose to believe

only what our eyes can see… since everything else is meant to deceive.

color does not define

from ivory skin to ebony it only refines

because black has no one design.

being black is seen as a crime

no matter how divine,

for we are born with a short timeline.

from our first to last breath,

our lives are plagued by death.

we talk about progression

when it comes to black oppression,

even though we neglect

to reflect

on white superiority

body cam dead, shots fired, silence

that's another fatality

fuck mortality

sadly

…this is just our reality.
