"Drill Team is not only known for its multiple different events but also for its diverse personalities. Drill Team is known for its physical and academically challenging events, which require our team to be a very diverse amount of people. With its vast amount of leadership opportunities, there’s a way for you to not only step out of your comfort zone but to connect with new people. I know that when I first joined the Drill Team, I was extremely shy. However, as the years went by, I slowly became more comfortable with not only myself but the people around me and realized that I wasn’t just a part of a team, but a family. This leads to the team having a very special connection with one another, because that we know everyone has to carry their part for the team to work." - C/LCDR Taylor Johnson, Drill CO 2023-2024

"Being apart of the Rifle Team is like being apart of another family. We cry together, laugh together, get annoyed with one another, but at the end of the day we are still family. Being apart of the Rifle Team isn’t for the weak. It’s about commitment, mental strengths, wins and losses, but we go through it together. Sometimes we win and sometimes we learn." - C/LTJG Kalinn White, Rifle CO 2023-2024

Competitions
There are two different types of competitions that the drone team competes in, COTS & REC
COTS stands for Commercial Off-The-Shelf, in these competitions the team flies drone that can be bought at stores like Walmart & Target. In these competitions, the hosting school will build their own obstacle course for other teams to fly. The courses tend to include a relay course, where the time doesn't stop between handing off the controller to your teammates. The courses also tend to include a obstacle course, which is a longer course that the team has to fly, but the time does stop between handing off the controller off to your teammates. The final thing the courses tend to include is a precision landing challenge, where the team has to land on many different targets scattered across the course area.
There are 4 different missions in the REC competitions, the challenges include a teamwork mission, where Drones are piloted by students. Two teams fly together on the same competition field to maximize their score. An autonomous flight mission where the drone is programmed by students to operate entirely autonomously. Each team competes alone to score as many points as possible. A piloting mission where the drone is piloted by students to fly through an obstacle course. Each team competes alone to score as many points as possible. And finally a communications mission, where teams are interviewed by judges about their drone, programming and competition logbook documentation.
