This is my sixth year as the Visual Arts Department head at Yreka High School and feel honored to be teaching here. I have taught in all grade levels, both in public and private schools. I was the director the Visual Arts Program for Moreno Valley High School in Angel Fire, New Mexico for one year before moving to Washington State where I was a full time sub. I have worked around starving & professional artists for many years. My Bachelors of Arts degree is in Education, Art, and Spanish from Fort Lewis College, Durango Colorado. I also studied at the University of Utah, and the Universidad del Pais Basco, in Spain. I am currently working on my graduate degree in Art Education through Azusa Pacific University. I truly believe that making Art, thinking creatively, and Art Appreciation are skills that greatly serve people & their communities. "The Arts" are a cornerstone in humanity and history.
Personal Interests:
Apart from teaching I love being in the outdoors. I enjoy backcountry snowboarding, dirt biking, and hunting. I also enjoy traveling, spending time with family, making my own Art, going to the ocean, playing music and building projects at home.
Teaching Philosophy:
I know that successful learning starts with connection and environment. From day one I try to create positive relationships in my classes and a welcoming environment. I understand that with those two things I can provide a structure of rigor and expectation that will more likely be met. From there I can push students to build craftsmanship, patience, intellect, opinion, planning skills, organization, self-discipline, creative & critical thinking skills. With positive relationships and a welcoming environment, my students are more willing to try things that are difficult, build relationships with others, think outside the box, experiment, and work hard on their compositions & projects. I think that technical skills come first and then creative skills come second when learning about art making, however, both are equally important in the bigger picture.
Recent & past works: In the last few years I have experimented with the "Blueprinting" process as a medium for Visual Art. This was the blueprinting process architects and engineers used in the late 1800s and forward. I have exhibited my artwork in galleries and coffee shops. I have also painted murals & guided student led murals. I like plein air painting, drawing, clay, blockprinting & screenprinting.
