"For my project, I wanted to explore what online learning looked like, and in March, this ended up being even more helpful than I could have planned. My interest in this started because when I was in college, we had some online aspects of our courses and some fully online courses. My experience was that, as students, we were reading something and posting to a message board. In my opinion, it was not an engaging or effective way to learn. I’d heard a lot about online learning in the last few years, and when I learned about the Virtual Learning Institute, I was excited to learn about how online learning had advanced. Adam, Darren, and Nooha walked me through some of the ways that they structured online learning at YSC, and I put together a writing course through my school’s LMS program, PowerSchool Learning. I launched this course with a few of my advanced kids, but there were a lot of snags and areas that needed improvement. It was difficult for them to navigate the course, and I didn’t have time to teach them how to do this. I’ve learned that teaching the tech is key to success. After my school went virtual in March, I continued to learn about the best ways to create online learning courses. This summer, I revamped my creative writing course, and I plan to roll it out to all of my English classes in the fall."
