"One of the most notable outcomes of an Independence education is the readiness our graduates possess for the next phase of their education and beyond. This preparedness can largely be attributed to our LeApps™ curriculum (formerly Learning Applications), a long-standing hallmark program unique to Independence. Under the direction of longtime Independence teacher Vita Biddle, LeApps evolved from a fifth-grade study skills course into a valuable, long-term educational program that begins in first grade and continues throughout each grade level until graduation.
Under the direction of longtime Independence teacher Vita Biddle, LeApps evolved from a fifth-grade study skills course into a valuable, long-term educational program that begins in first grade and continues throughout each grade level until graduation.
Students in fifth grade have an intensive, year-long LeApps course that sets them up for success in the later middle and high school years, when greater independence becomes a requirement. They have the chance to apply the LeApps lessons directly to work in all content areas.

The LeApps curriculum also provides opportunities for individual support in certain situations, guided study halls to apply and practice new skills, and drop-in lessons for lower school classrooms."

From Vita Biddle: "It has been my desire to put this course into an online format so that it can be shared with students both in our school and in others. Using Canvas, I have been able to capture the essence of the course and have maintained the integrity of the learning goals that I present to my fifth graders each year. Much of the information disseminated in this course is based on current brain research, and the Canvas platform easily enables me to upload articles and videos for my students’ use. VLI has provided me with the impetus and motivation to accomplish my goal of creating an online class."
