Operation Christmas
Written by Kat Smith
The Fellow Christian Athletes (FCA) club has helped with Operation Christmas Child for the past 8 years. This club is run by Mrs. Author and Mrs. Tierny. Operation Christmas Child is a way to help children in third world countries. When you get a box, you pick the gender and age of the child you would like to help for the holidays. This is a way to help children that are less fortunate than you. This year they were able to gather 25 boxes and $100 in donations.

Overly's & Toys for Tots
Written by Sidney Bergman
This year, CAP/SADD had volunteered on three days this winter at Overley’s. Members worked in the kitchen, the kettle corn booth, the sweets shop, and tended to the fire. All who attended got five hours of service. Thank you to all for helping your community!
Toys For Tots was also very successful this year. There were a total of 291 toys; thank you to all who donated! Anyone who brought in a toy was allowed to watch a movie – this year it was Twisters. The students who attended enjoyed the movie and stayed respectful. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Berich for allowing and organizing the event.
Student Council Elves
Written by Julie Shuber
Every year children all over the world write letters to Santa Claus listing what they hope to find under their Christmas tree this year. The special thing about Yough’s first grade students’ letters is that they received a response and a visit from Santa himself! Girls from Yough High School’s Student Council donned their pointy shoes and elf ears and traveled with Santa to all three elementary schools. They paid a visit to all the first grade students of each of the schools. Prior to their visit, they read each letter the kids sent and responded to them in Claus fashion. They took these responses to the elementary schools and passed them out for the kids to read. The kids also made a craft with the elves and Santa read The Night Before Christmas to them. Santa Claus and the elves’ visit was for a literacy program that takes place throughout the district specifically for first graders. Their teachers helped them to write the letters and the elves helped to read the response letters. The program allows the students to gain more experience with reading and writing.
