Please note that the activities below are not endorsed by Yorktown High School or the guidance department and that you are encouraged to further explore these opportunities to see whether they are the right fit for you. Please see the community office webpage for specific information regarding community service criteria and opportunities as well.

OneWorldGirl: the Changemakers Council:
Open to grades 8-12. The changemakers council is a group of young women who participate in a year long journey of learning and mentorship to build and utilize leadership gifts in the community. Youth Leadership- President’s Junior Leadership council: Northern Westchester Hospital’s President’s Junior Leadership Council (PJLC), a student healthcare leadership program, is now accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year, which will begin in September 2023.

They welcome students in 8th, 9th, 10th grades.
What is the PJLC?
The PJLC is a youth leadership program whose mission is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of youth in Northern Westchester County. PJLC members:
Are considered volunteers of Northern Westchester Hospital
Act as liaisons between community youth, their schools, and Hospital
Help identify key health issues affecting young people and develop programs to address them
Support, advise, and assist NWH in efforts to promote health and wellness in the community
Explore careers in healthcare

American Legion Student Night:
Date: Saturday November 11, 2023

Description: High School students and their family are welcome to attend. Learn how students can participate in The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship program open to area high school students in grades 9 -12 with a national finalist scholarship award of $25,000.
Boys State, NY: A week long summer program for juniors that focuses on state government and citizenship.Two outstanding participants from over 300 state attendees, will be selected for a second week long program at Boy's Nation in Washington, DC
Empire Girls State: students in their junior year are competitively selected by the American Legion Auxiliary. ALA Girls Nation offers two girls in the program a second week long opportunity in our Capitol.
Summer employment at YCSD:
Open to sophomores, juniors and graduating seniors: The Yorktown Central School District anticipates summer student employment opportunities in our facilities and technology departments. Application can be obtained and returned to the high school main office. Application due date: May 2023.
Arts Westchester:
Teen Tuesdays & Thursdays is a FREE after-school program that engages youth ages 12-16 yrs in fun and creative art activities with professional teaching artists. Monthly workshops are FREE and enrollment is first come, first serve.
Workshops are held at ArtsWestchester at 31 Mamaroneck Ave, 5th Floor, White Plains, NY 10601, 4:30-6pm.

Jazz forum:
Jazz Forum Arts, located in Tarrytown, NY, is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit arts presenting organization, founded in 1985. Jazz Forum Arts is committed to providing accessible programs and events to audiences throughout the New York Metropolitan area. The organization features top-quality events at little or no cost, including its' Affordable Live Music, Free Summer Concert series, Monthly Jam Sessions and student-run programs. Jazz Forum Arts features established, emerging, and under-recognized artists and regional, national, and international musicians. A multitude of styles are offered from Progressive and Bebop to Latin & Brazilian, World Music, Rhythm and Blues, New Orleans, Traditional, Swing and Contemporary Jazz.
Beginning in February, JFA will offer a Jazz Forum Student Ensemble, a new teen program for aspiring young musicians in grades 5-12, led by Ron Vincent and Nancy Kennedy. Students will learn jazz improvisation and basic harmony while playing with their peers. The program runs for 11 weeks and includes an end of semester concert. All interested students and instruments are welcome. Though, students should have a minimum two years experience on their instrument and a basic knowledge of major scales, fingerings and be comfortable reading music.

FBI Teen Academy:
What: A leadership academy that exposes students to the different career options available in the FBI.
When: July 11- July 22, 2022

HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS SOUGHT FOR NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE CAMP
Applications are now being accepted from high school seniors to represent New York State at the 2023 National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp).
Two students from each state, Washington, D.C, and 8 countries will attend the camp which will be held June - July. See website for specific dates.
The National Youth Science Camp is a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunity. The camp will provide daily lectures and seminars with leading scientists, directed studies alongside visiting and resident STEM professionals and engage in activities in the natural, physical, computer sciences, and creative arts.
The deadline to apply is February. Applications must be submitted online

Global Scholar equips youth leaders to be bold and visionary change makers around urgent global challenges. Participants learn about global issues from experts, build tools to engage their peers and communities, and take the next steps in launching purposeful careers. Global Scholars learn with and from some of the brightest young minds working on these issues today.

YMCA Teen Leaders Club: This club is a nationwide YMCA program for teens ages 13-18. Participants gain leadership skills through community service and fun activities. Teen Leaders meet weekly at Camp Combe in Putnam Valley. For more information contact ssullivan@ymca-cnw.org
Pegasus Therapeutic Riding: Brewster, NY. This is a non profit that serves people with special needs. High school student volunteers are needed to work with the horses and children with special needs at Pegasus Farm in Brewster, NY. Training is provided. IBM Family Science Saturdays: Strong science and math student volunteers may be interested in volunteering at Family Science Saturdays, a series of hands-on science workshops for 4th and 5th grade children and their parents. Due to COVID, dates TBD.
Sophomores only: Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp. The Yorktown Rotary will sponsor tenth graders to attend the leadership program. Applications must be emailed to Mr. Stephen Ucko, President-elect, at stevuke12@gmail.com or mailed to Yorktown Rotary, Box 432, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. Deadline is in February. Applications can be picked up in the guidance office. You may also email Mr. Ucko for an application.
