Reputedly the largest student-run contemporary music ensemble in the UK, The Chimera Ensemble was founded by Bernard Rands in 1970. The Chimera Ensemble is made up of students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, from a variety of disciplines at the University of York. Students organise, conduct, and perform works of contemporary classical music from professional composers from around the world as well as up-and-coming composers at the University.
