To measure sound–symbol correspondence (SSC) knowledge, we asked participants to complete the following four tasks.
This task involved participants listening to a set of bisyllabic real (French: k = 25; Spanish; k = 20) and pseudo (French: k = 25; Spanish; k = 20) words, each presented individually and in isolation. After listening to each word, participants had to complete its spelling by typing in the missing SSC.

Participants listened to a short text and transcribed (typed) the text in the box provided. The text was played three times: First in full, and for the second and third times, it was split into parts, with short pauses between each part. Participants could not pause or rewind the audio; they could only start it.

Participants were presented with a set of disyllabic real (French: k = 25; Spanish; k = 20) and pseudo-words (French: k = 25; Spanish; k = 20). Each word was presented individually and in isolation and participants had to read each word aloud.
