Final Reflection
I am most proud of my Raku project because of how I was able to connect the two pieces while figuring out a new style of ceramics at the same time. I haven’t worked much with building sculptures out of clay, and after a few attempts, I am happy with the realism and overall look of both snails. I am also proud of the bowl, since I was still pretty new to throwing at the time and had to work through a bit of a learning curve. While the glazes turned out different from what I expected, the finished pieces are unique and something I am proud of.
The set of four bowls project was one of the most informative and challenging assignments of this semester. I learned how challenging it really is to throw pieces that are roughly the same dimensions, and picked up a lot of small techniques around throwing that have helped me throughout the rest of the semester. For example, learning how to center was something I struggled with a lot. By throwing almost every class, I was able to learn the appropriate amount of pressure to use and how to brace my hands.
One of my goals was to get comfortable with throwing on the wheel. While I am by no means an advanced thrower, I have learned a lot this semester and have grown a lot more comfortable going through the process of throwing a piece on my own. I also wanted to get better at finishing my pieces and work on some handbuilding. I definitely accomplished that through my candle project. By working with a lot of small slabs and cutting out many windows, this helped me improve my handbuilding skills significantly.
Initial Thoughts
The ceramics piece I am most proud from Ceramics 1 is my slab box because I was able to keep it very neat and finished. I took a lot of time on the design and I like how the neutral background makes the colorful fruit pop. I am inspired a lot by where I live and the nature around me - the ocean, woods, plants, and other natural elements of Maine all influence my work. I would like to learn how to throw on the wheel and becoe comfortable with it. I would also like to learn how to make more unique handbuilding forms and improve the finish on them (smooth sides, solid connections, neat glaze). I always think learning new glazing techniques are interesting - different ways to apply them, different color combinations, etc. To make sure everything is completed, I will use a planner and will request Clipper time or meet outside of school as needed to finish pieces on time.
