Stoneware and glaze, 3 in x 3 in x 2.5 in
Purpose:
Use a 3” x 3” post-it as a template to create a multiple-sided, lidded box out of slabs.
Tie together the different sides and lid of the box with connected shapes/concepts.
Reflection:
I kept the theme of fruits and vegetables all around my box. I tried to have some of the carvings go around the corners of the box to draw the eye around the whole design. By leaving the rest of the box its natural color with clear glaze on top, the fruit design with all its bright colors stand out nicely. I also designed the handle to stand out as well as fit in with the theme of my box - the apple shape is functional as well as decorative. The inside of the box was glazed to match the red of the apple, tying the box together even further.
I really like the simplicity and detail of the box. I’m glad that I took the time while I was connecting the slabs to make sure each side was even and smooth, because the symmetry of the shape is part of what I think made it very successful. The details in the sgraffito provided an interesting element that stood out against the neutral background. If I were to make this again, I would clean up the glaze around the fruit a bit more. I might try to add something more to the background, but I like the simplicity of this design.
