Ceramics 1, S25

Like other art forms such as drawing and painting, ceramics requires a planning and sketching process before creating your final product. Ceramics is different from other art forms I’m familiar with because it is building a 3D piece, rather than just using different mediums on paper. To stay organized this semester, I will use a physical planner for homework, and then track upcoming assignments on a digital planner. I also have a folder for this class so I can keep track of loose papers. Since I am new to ceramics, I will probably take inspiration from artists that I find online or other pieces created by past students. I take lots of inspiration from nature as well. I’d like to make some form of usable dish while experimenting with different textures, shapes, and colors this semester.
I am most proud of my coil pot because of the challenges that I pushed through to create a final product that I was happy with. Instead of just continuing with the two misshapen pots that I started with, I took the extra time to create a third pot that kept the dimensions I had planned out. I also really like the design on this pot because it is simple and personal.
I think the slab box was one of the most informative projects we did this semester. I had done pinch pots in past art classes throughout middle school, but this project got into more complex skills that helped me create a neat and polished piece. Learning how to connect two slabs, bevel to make a box, and carve out designs really helped me develop a better understanding of clay and ceramics.
My goal was to experiment with different textures, colors, patterns, and to begin understanding the basic techniques of ceramics. I was happy to have many opportunities to try different techniques—one project that helped me achieve this goal was the pinch pot project. While there were some guidelines, I had plenty of room to try different shapes and patterns. Another goal was to create a functional piece that I could use at home. I managed to make more than one piece, including my mug, mini mug, and several little pinch pots.
