Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
Response
1. How would you describe the types of marks you used to show value in your drawing? Which artist’s technique (Henry Moore, Vincent Van Gogh, Giorgio Morandi), did you use in your drawing? How did this kind of mark-making help you with creating value and value changes? Please explain.
The types of marks i used were heavily inspired by the works of Henry Moore and Vincent van Gogh, the marks were controlled scribbles but instead of having curved lines I used straight lines to give a rough feeling, the way that this helped my in making my still life. This helped in my value because I understood that less lines means lighter and the scribbles really worked well with the lights
2. Look at your pre-instructional drawing (the one you did in your sketchbook) and your final still life drawing. What differences do you notice? Where do you see the most improvement in your work? What are some of your takeaways/learnings from doing this drawing unit?
That the roundness of objects has improved by a lot and my values got very muddled together in the shadows. The most improvements i felt are in the shadows and darkness because it feels like they are shadows and not just blotches of black. This showed me that there are a ton of ways to do drawing and make it realistic
