Purpose:
To understand and to demonstrate the basic structure of your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Reflection:
While working on this project, I learned a lot about the medium of charcoal as well as more about myself as an artist. First of all, practice in drawing facial features has helped me figure out some universal techniques by manipulating values. Things like drawing wrinkles or folds in skin, I am now more confident in. Additionally, having the opportunity to work with charcoal has helped me learn how to create depth with strikingly dark tones. Especially having to work with a darker colored paper than I'm used to, it forced me to really think about how much value to add to each part in my drawings in relation to the whole piece. Finally, while woking on these pieces I learned that for a facial feature to look realistic, it cannot stand alone. Facial features need almost a "background" of whatever is around them. Otherwise they appear detached from a human making them look flat and less realistic.
