Observational Drawing
Observational Drawing
Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still-life drawing?
Project Goals:
Learn about artists who work to use mark-making to show volume in their drawings
Learn and refine observational drawing skills, including contour drawing, perspective, value, measuring, proportion, and placement of objects
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
Reflection:
I would describe the types of marks that I used as small dots layered on top of each other to create value in my drawing. The types of marks that I used were influenced by Henry Moore’s drawing style. In Henry Moore’s drawings, he uses many seemingly random lines that when looked at up close appear as a mess, but from far away the lines create one cohesive piece. Up close my drawing looks like a bunch of dots, but when looking at it from further away my drawing looks like objects on a table.

Pre-Instructional Drawing:
While comparing my final piece and my original drawing, my final drawing looks much more intentional. During this drawing unit, I’ve learned how to draw objects in comparison to one another, and how to properly create light and dark values. I think I’ve improved most on not being afraid to use dark values which has led to a much more eye-catching drawing.
