Purpose:
To photograph in the style of Walter Wick, inspired by his work in the “I Spy” children’s book series.
To photograph an arrangement of objects that express a similar theme.
To arrange objects into a complex composition that leads the eye and demonstrates an understanding of balance, lighting, and color.
To create a rhyme that connects to the hidden objects.
“Sticks and Stones” 3/12/2024
In a green car, we'll ride for hours,
Past purple flowers, and blooming bowers.
With a golf tee for a wand, we'll play make-believe,
Under green leaves, where dreams weave and cleave.
“The Great Outdoors” 3/8/2024
In a speedy car, we roam,
With M&M's, our sweetest tome.
Beneath the sky, where seashells gleam,
We find a pink flower, a dream supreme.
I chose these objects because I thought I could make good rhymes out of them, and I thought they would be very fun for me to try to hide in the background. I selected these specific themes because they represent important parts of nature that I really like, and I thought they looked very outdoorsy. I really like the pieces of wood and the seashells on the left because they remind me of the beach, and I like the colored leaves on the right because they remind me of the fall. I was aiming to convey a portrait of the outdoors, and often times little details can be lost in the grand scheme of the outdoors, so I thought hiding things in aspects of nature would encourage my audience to search the outdoors and focus on individual parts. I learned that art is often a process of trial and error and that it takes a while to really get it to be the way you want it, and that once you achieve your goal, then it feels really good. One thing I would do differently next time is to try to pick all objects that match my theme so that they can be harder to find. Some of my hidden objects made perfect sense in accordance with my themes, but other times they don't make much sense and I could have done a better job with that.
