Essential Question: What are the necessary skills to create a convincing still life drawing?
Purpose:
To create a still-life drawing that demonstrates understanding of angles & ellipses in perspective, along with using a chosen and conscious mark-making technique to describe form;
To understand value by creating a good range of values between black & white to help make the objects appear 3D;
To demonstrate quality craftsmanship and good composition skills in a drawing.
Artists Studied: Henry Moore, Giorgio Morandi, Vincent van Gogh, Winslow Homer, John Whalley
REFLECTION: I would describe it as sort of like a tic tac toe setup but the direction of the lines are a little different. I used cross hatching which was a technique of Vincent van Gogh. I used cross hatching because I felt that would be most successful for me. It helped me because I found it quite simple to change the value of the shapes or just certain spots on the shapes by either making the lines close together or far apart to show more lightness or darkness.
I notice that in my final drawing I did a much better job at making the shapes look 3-D compared to my pre-instructional drawing. I noticed that in my final drawing I drew the shapes more accurately based on position and in my first drawing it seems that I just drew them next to each other, so I think I improved on making the position of shapes more accurate with more practice. Some takeaways are that it takes time and patience to be able to make these as accurate as you can and it is very unlikely that you get everything right the first time you draw it.
