A project I want to complete this semester is working with waterfronts in the winter. I want to capture what Maine looks like when the tourists are gone and the waterfronts are empty. People who are not from Maine need to see the beauty of the Maine winters. My goal is to take photos of beaches that are empty and fun tourist locations. And I would want to get scenes from towns that shut down during the winter. One technical skill I'll need to learn so I can make this happen is perspective. I don't want my photos to be taken at the same angle or view. I want to tell the story of Maine's harsh winters.
A personal photographic style I want to explore with this project is a place-based style. I would dive into the idea of showing a sense of place. I want to show how a place feels, not just how it looks from the outside. I want to explore telling a story about the places I visit. I will develop this with the perspectives I use and my editing choices. I don't want to tell the story of the photograph; I want you to be able to look at my photograph and just know what I am trying to capture in it. I will know I have made progress when I am taking photos of the locations and editing the new perspectives.
The real-world outcome that I want at the end of this semester is to have client work. It doesn't really have a lot to do with my Maine Coast photography, but I definitely want to put myself out there on the internet. The steps I will take to reach that goal is too build my portfolio, and then post on my photography Instagram that I am looking to shoot clients. Once I do that, I will make appointments and do lots more photoshoots. And if that goes well, one of my main goals is to shoot weddings. I would love to tell the story of love. I love shooting people, and capturing someone's special day would be my favorite job.
The weakness I want to improve is photographing landscapes. Which is why I want to complete the Maine Coast photography. I believe that I can photograph subjects like people really well. But I really want to expand my photography skills, and work with coastlines, mountains, forrests. To add to that, I want to work with color and black-and-white photography. There's not really one way I will be able to practice shooting landscapes weekly, but when I do, I will work extra hard to find that perfect perspective or new angle.
