GUIDELINES FOR HOMEWORK:
Students are expected to spend a minimum of 10-15 minutes a night practicing their WL. Most nights this will take the form of practicing with assigned Quizlet sets, watching assigned Edpuzzle videos, filming an assigned FlipGrid, or practicing on Duolingo to complete assigned points. If students fall behind on work, work will be marked as missing and/or entered as a 0 on Powerschool, with the teacher expectation that it will be made up, completed, and turned in for credit.
GUIDELINES FOR RE-TAKING ASSESSMENTS:
Students are always given advance notice for the dates (on the Google Classroom Calendar) and expectations for assessments via rubrics (which will be posted on the Google Classroom. Lots of time will be given to practice in class, to feel ready students need to use their time well, sometimes independently, other times with a partner or group.
Sometimes students may not do their best work, so the language teachers at HMS developed these guidelines which apply only to quizzes.
1. Quizzes may be retaken because they are formative assessments that give feedback, and part of the learning process.
2. The higher grade will be posted in PowerSchool with a note indicating that the student retook the quiz. More than one retake is at the teacher's discretion.
3. The re-take must be taken in advance of the end of a unit.
4. It is the student’s responsibility to visit the teacher during study hall to take advantage of redoing low quiz grades.
5. Retaking a summative assessment (an end of unit assessment) is done at the teacher's discretion, and usually only due to unusual circumstances (perhaps an extended absence or other very challenging circumstances). Because there will be ample time for practice leading up to the summative assessment, typically this is not an issue, and students are ready to do their best on summative assessments (which are reflective of the formative assessments, and as noted above, formative assessments can be redone if needed, after meeting with the teacher for extra help and getting in some extra independent practice).
