Ms. Hunter grew up in Northern Maine and was inspired to learn languages by the region’s French Acadian heritage and the many exchange students that her family hosted. During high school she spent a year living with a wonderful French host family in Arras, France. She attended a Lycée (French high school) and played soccer with a club team. In France, she also took her first Spanish class! Her love of French and Spanish led her to McGill University in Quebec, Canada, where she was part of the McGill women's soccer team. Her coaches would sometime coach the team in French. During a summer break as a university student, she lived on a coffee cooperative in Costa Rica for a month. Ms. Hunter earned her B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from McGill. After graduating, she moved to California, and and completed her teaching credential at San Francisco, State University. She lived in San Francisco's Hispanic Mission District, and enjoyed doing her grocery shopping in Spanish. Her first teaching job was at a bilingual school in Puebla, Mexico, where she lived for two years.
Ms. Hunter has taught both middle school and high school, and has travelled with her students to Quebec, Puerto Rico, and Spain. She also loves to travel with her family. During the fall of 2017, she spent a sabbatical semester with her family in Spain. They lived and studied in the city of Salamanca, where her son, who was 12 at the time, attended colegio (Spanish middle school). They also hiked the Camino de Santiago del Norte, which is an 827-kilometer / 514-mile hike across northern Spain.
She is currently living her dream of teaching both French and Spanish at HMS!
