Overview of 6th Grade French and Spanish
At HMS The 6th grade program is also only exploratory in design. Students select one language (either French or Spanish) and focus on that language for the quarter as part of their unified arts rotation. After a review of phrases and vocabulary from the 5th grade language curriculum, students are introduced to additional phrases to help them communicate in the target language. They learn to use simple vocabulary to communicate. Students also mime and draw to reinforce what they have learned. Students are assessed throughout the quarter. No written homework is given at this level.
Classes meet every other day for two months. French/Spanish is part of the Unified Arts rotation. The emphasis of the course is on speaking and listening comprehension. We study basic greetings and have conversations using numbers 1-100, days, months, seasons, the alphabet, colors, and food. Activities include puppet shows, games such as fly swatter and pop-up, and songs. Students are encouraged to continue studying the language they chose in 6th grade when they move on to 7th grade. Students are assessed throughout the quarter, but no written homework is given at this level.
