Overview of 6th Grade Program

Overview of 6th Grade French and Spanish

The 6th grade program is expanding to a yearlong program during the 2022-23 school year. Students select one language (either French or Spanish) and focus on that language daily for as part of their Unified Arts rotation. Students will engage with their language of choice at the Novice Level. No written homework is given at this level.

In 6th Grade, students will continue to expand their knowledge of introductory vocabulary and expressions, become more familiar with how to learn a language, and gain confidence in their communication skills, as well as with exploring new cultures. The emphasis of the course is on novice-level skills, such as developing listening comprehension for main ideas and speaking using memorized phrases. We will have "mini" conversations using basic vocabulary and conversational expressions, with the an emphasis on communicating (mistakes are okay and part of learning). Novice level units and themes will relate to numbers from 1-100, calendar vocabulary, sharing basic information, simple descriptions of people and place, and describing our emotions and talking about basic needs, identifying and describing what surrounds us in our school and community, as well as, a unit on nature and animals. Activities will include learning through reading, games, video clips, and songs. Students will have wrap up assessments near the end of each unit, and no written homework is given at this level. Students are encouraged to continue studying the language that they choose in 6th grade when they move on to 7th grade.
