Purpose:
To understand what pinhole photography is;
To learn about the process used to create pinhole photography
Ilan Wolfe
Construction Worker, NYC, Ilan Wolfe
Farmhouse 4, Switzerland, Ilan Wolfe
Wolfe works in a unique way in my opinion because his pinhole photos seem much older and almost like he went back in time. He photographs subjects that look similar to things that existed a hundred years ago, for example the barn in Switzerland above. The discoloration of some oh his images have the same effect. Also, a lot of his photographs are distorted, like his Eiffel Tower photographs and they give the effect of a fisheye camera. I find it really interesting how Wolfe is able to make his photographs seem so old with modern day subjects.
Vera Lutter:
Chephren and Cheops Pyramids, Giza, Vera Lutter, April 12, 2010
30th Street Station, Philadelphia, Vera Lutter, April 20, 2006
Lutter is unique because she originally started as a sculptor but became famous for her obscura-pinhole images. I noticed how she photographs mainly industrial and urban subjects. However, Lutter also photographs landscapes, nature, and ancients subjects like the pyramids of Giza above. I like her work because compared to other photographers, her pinhole images are more clear and less "morphed" than others. My favorite image of hers is the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia above. I like how futuristic but industrial it looks.
