How to Report Phishing Emails

While our email systems do thier best to spot and block spam and phishing emails, some still will get through. It is up to all of our staff stay vigilant in spotting these emails that will still make it through. Once you have spotted an email you believe is phishy, do not click on any links or images contained in the email. instead, there is a button within outlook that you can click on that will report the phishing email back to our email systems. While no system is perfect in preventing every email from getting through, this will help our systems better learn and prevent as many as possible from getting through our filtering.

If you have an email you believe is a phishing email, first click on the email to make it the active one or double click to open the email. Then click on the link that is found in the top right hand corner of outlook called "Report Phishiness". The icon looks like a little envelope with a red fish inside of it seen in outlook on your PC here:

Or as seen as a smaller icon in OWA (Outlook Web Access) below:

This will report the email to our email security systems to help them better learn as these emails get more and more complicated and harder to detect. Once you click this button to report the email, you will get one of two notifications.

The first type ofnotification tells you "This was a mock phishing attack and you passed" When you see this message, you successfully reported a phishing email that our systems sent out as a test to see if you could spot a phishing email and not click on any links (Seen below):

The second type of notification just tells you "The message has been sent for analysis." This means that the phishing email you reported could have actualy been a real phishing attack that has gotten through our filtering. (Seen below):

That's all there is to it! You have succesully reported spam to our filtering helping it to better learn and protect our entire district. This will help us keep our data safe. You can also forward the email to: security@wvsd208.org.
