Mote is a voice-commenting app which can be integrated into many different webpages, such as Google Classroom. It is a great tool to be able to give learners quick verbal feedback on their work, or to give instruction if you feel that a task could be better explained through your own voice.
Mote can be downloaded and added as a free Google Chrome extension which allows you to add your own voice notes to any webpage.
It's really easy to install Mote onto your Google Chrome Browser!
Go to the Chrome Web Store
Search for Mote
Then click on Add to Chrome
You're done - you now have the option to create short 30 second audio clips which can be added anywhere!
A great advantage of using Mote is that with any voice recording you create, it can be easily accessed and integrated into any webpage, Google Classroom comment or email you send.
To be able to start a Mote recording, click the Mote logo where your Google Chrome extensions are and click on the Record a Mote Voice Note button to get started. Depending on the account type you have, will depend on how long the recording can be made.Â
Once you have finished your recording, it will automatically copied to your clipboard for you to paste the link where ever you need to!
You can also click on the Share button which will give you three options:
You will have a Link to copy and insert
You can create a QR Code where students can use their mobile devices to scan the code and receive the recording
You can link the recording directly to Google Classroom and be set as a material or as part of an assignment
When providing feedback on Google Classroom assignments, you are able to leave comments on students work and private comments for formative feedback. With Mote, you can save time typing out your feedback and use the audio recording to voice the feedback straight to the student. This saves time for you as a teacher/lecturer and also gives the learner an exact idea on what they need to do next to perform in their next assignment.
Using Mote in comments will allow you to highlight certain sentences in a piece of work to provide an exact commentary and feedback for the learner.
When providing feedback to learners, it may be the case that the feedback you are giving is universal and is the same for a lot of the work that has been submitted. This could mean a lot of copying and pasting of the same information which isn't always best practice creatively.
With Mote, you can create an audio asset bank with a number of different phrases so when you provide audio feedback, you can use a pre-saved Mote clips that you have recorded in the past.
This feature is not currently available on the free version of Mote, so take a look at this video for more information.
Mote is a great asset for a teacher/lecturer to have as it is fully integrated into Google Classroom and Google Applications. A great feature that will be useful, especially for creating asynchronous lessons, is the option to integrate Mote recordings directly into Google Slides without having to comment.
Open up a Google Slides document and with Mote installed, you will see the Mote button at the top of the Slides page.
Record your Mote as you usually would and once finished, you can Insert the Mote and have this as a playable button on any Slide!
