Creating an Effective Learning Space 

A successful learning space is more than just a desk and chair. Students learn best when they have access to spaces that support different types of learning while minimizing distractions.

Set Up for Success

• Choose a quiet, distraction-free area for online learning.

• Ensure the desk and chair allow the student to sit comfortably and maintain good posture while using the computer.

• Create flexible seating options, such as a comfortable chair or bean bag, for independent reading.

• Provide a larger workspace, such as a kitchen table, for projects, writing, and hands-on activities.

• Keep commonly used supplies organized and within easy reach.

• Display helpful learning resources, such as a word wall, world map, calendar, or reference materials.

Think Beyond One Room

A learning space doesn't have to be limited to a single desk or room. Many families find success by creating different spaces for different activities.

Examples include:

• A desk or table for online lessons and assignments.

• A kitchen or dining table for art projects, writing, and hands-on work.

• A comfortable chair or couch for independent reading and novel studies.

• A refrigerator or magnetic board for displaying vocabulary words, schedules, reminders, and learning aids.

The Role of the Learning Coach

An active and supportive Learning Coach plays an important role in a student's success in an online learning environment. A Learning Coach may be a parent, guardian, family member, or another trusted adult who provides daily encouragement, guidance, and support. 

As a Learning Coach, you can: 

Establish a consistent daily routine.

Provide a quiet, organized learning environment.

Monitor academic progress and attendance.

Encourage communication with teachers when questions arise.

Support time management and assignment completion.

Celebrate successes and encourage perseverance through challenges.
