• • ESL - English as a Second Language - an older term used for English language instruction provided by teachers with ESL licensure

  • EL/ELL- English Learner/English Language Learner- a student who is eligible to participate in the district's English language instructional program (SEI).

  • LEP - Limited English Proficient - an older initialism used by the federal and state data systems to identify students who are eligible to participate in an English language program

  • FEL - Former English Learner students - a student who has exited the English language program (SEI) by attaining ACCESS scores of 3.9 in combined literacy and 4.2 overall. Schools monitor the academic progress of former English learners for four (4) years. FELs do not participate in WIDA ACCESS for ELLs.

  • ELD - English Language Development - the process of acquiring advanced English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening

  • SEI - Sheltered English Immersion - Wilmington's English language instruction 

  • WIDA - formerly known as World Class Instructional Design and Assessment - a consortium that supports English language development through  standards for instruction and an assessment. system for measuring progress in and attainment of English language skills.
