Wilmington's Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and 2020 WIDA Standards. WIDA provides information and resources for ESL and content teachers to collaborate, review data, and plan instruction that considers multilingual students at varying levels of English language proficiency. While general education and content teachers offer expertise in content, child development, and instructional strategies, ESL teachers specialize in culturally proficient teaching strategies, sociocultural linguistics, and differentiating for multilingual learners. Through shared responsibility, educators and administrators work together to meet the needs of Multilingual learners.
Wilmington students come from many different cultures and speak more than 35 languages, including Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Gujarati.
