Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education regulations require that all schools determine the language(s) spoken in each student’s home in order to identify their specific language needs. The information reported is essential for schools to provide meaningful instruction for all students. If a language other than English is spoken in the home, districts are required to collect additional data and assessment results.
This form is sent home to parents informing them that their child is eligible to receive English language support in order to develop advanced proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This form is sent home at the beginning of each academic year and includes initial WIDA Screener or ACCESS assessment scores, program descriptions, and contact information. Also included is information about requesting an alternate ELE program, and the option of declining placement in the English language support program.
Parents or legal guardians have the right to decline their child's placement in the Wilmington's English language support program (SEI). The parent or legal guardian should revisit their decision to opt-out every year and submit a new request for the current academic year.
Parents who have declined SEI may opt back into the program at any time by written request sent to their child's ESL teacher, the ELE Curriculum Team Leader, or school administrator.
