Flora Aliaga - Community Manager @WfI

David Watters - Head of Marketing @WFI
Interview date: May 7th 2025
Social impact on ICs and their communities
Higher earnings & livelihood stability: Stakeholders report that WfI’s fair-wage model significantly improves contractors’ incomes - often surpassing local rates - which translates into better living conditions for ICs and their families.
Empowerment & skill development: Through Pathways and community support (e.g., cover-letter coaching, remote-work best practices), contractors gain confidence and “market-ready skills”. This leads to greater autonomy, especially for women balancing income generation with family responsibilities.
Positive ripple effects: Successful alumni (e.g., securing bank roles, joining WfI’s team, supporting extended families) illustrate how WfI’s programs extend benefits into local communities, fostering broader socio-economic uplift.
Client-facing value & brand differentiation
Streamlined hiring & quality talent: Clients appreciate WfI’s curated short-listing, transparent fee structure, and flexibility. This reduces their recruitment burden and fosters longer engagements, as contractors feel respected and fairly compensated.
Embedded social impact credentials: WfI’s B-Corp status and revenue reinvestment into Pathways reinforce its market positioning. Clients view ethical outsourcing as enhancing their CSR goals, and marketing sees this narrative as a differentiator.
Platform limitations & growth barriers
Job volume constraints: Internal stakeholders note that a limited number of active listings leads to contractor inactivity. Expanding the client base and diversifying job categories could reduce inactive users and maintain engagement.
Competition from larger platforms: Despite WfI’s social mission, larger freelance marketplaces still draw talent. Greater marketing focus on WfI’s higher pay and social impact could help capture a larger share of both contractors and clients.
Operational & technical improvements
Onboarding & user experience: The existing website and application flow have friction points. Simplifying sign-up processes and clarifying job-matching steps would reduce drop-offs and accelerate placements.
Expanded talent pool & language barriers: English proficiency remains a gatekeeper for many potential ICs. Consider offering language-support resources or alternative pathways to attract non-English speakers.
Community engagement & ongoing support
Consistency of community activation: While live events and resource sharing keep active members engaged, only ~10% of the 9,000-member community remains active. Building more interactive peer-mentoring or regionally focused subgroups may boost sustained involvement.
Enhanced feedback loops: Regular check-ins with both clients and ICs can surface emerging challenges (e.g., evolving skill-needs, local market shifts) and guide iterative improvements to both the platform and training programs.
Clients
Andrew Echeguren - Senior Customer Experience Manager @ Curiosity Inc.
Interview date: April 29th 2025
Paul Beirne - Head of Customer Experience @ Propercloth
Interview date: May 16th 2025
Reasons for choosing WfI
Cost savings: Curiosity Inc. now pays roughly one-third of its prior outsourcing costs by switching to WfI. Propercloth chose WfI because other providers were more expensive and less flexible.
Social Impact & B-Corp Status: Both clients were drawn by WfI’s commitment to impact by design as a Certified B-Corp - combining competitive pricing with positive impact on contractors’ lives.
Transparency: Clear, upfront breakdowns of hourly rates and fees gave clients confidence in exactly what they were paying and how it supported fair wages for ICs.
What clients appreciate most
Dedicated, engaged teams: Curiosity reports its seven full-time contractors are hardworking, kind, and highly engaged. Propercloth’s five ICs integrate seamlessly - covering U.S. office hours, nights, and holidays from the Philippines.
Seamless onboarding & support: Both clients found WfI’s HR process easy: Curiosity trained its team over two weeks with smooth coordination, and Propercloth benefited from WfI’s help refining job descriptions and pre-selecting candidates.
Flexibility & scalability: WfI makes it simple to adjust team size as workloads change. Contractors’ willingness to work varied shifts (including public holidays) ensures continuous coverage.
Values alignment: While neither client has a formal CSR department, they appreciate WfI’s ethical approach and shared commitment to fair pay - even as some stakeholders focus primarily on business metrics.
Areas for improvement
Brand recognition: Curiosity notes that global talent recruitment with ethics built-in remains unfamiliar to many U.S. stakeholders; stronger impact storytelling and marketing would help broaden awareness.
These insights confirm that WfI’s blend of cost efficiency, ethical positioning, transparent pricing, and reliable onboarding are core strengths, while enhanced visibility could attract more clients receptive to ethical outsourcing.
