Academic Intervention

What is Multi-tiered System of Support?

The West Long Branch Schools District has adopted the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Intervention.  Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various needs.  MTSS takes a proactive approach to identifying students with academic or behavioral needs. Early assessment and intervention for these students can help them catch up with their peers sooner. The key components of MTSS include:

How Are Students Identified for Intervention?

Identification for academic support is based on data collected through formal/informal assessments, student performance and teacher observation. You can learn more about state & local assessments by visiting our ASSESSMENT page.

Who Delivers Academic Intervention/Support?

Academic support is delivered by certified content area teachers and/or our certified district ELA & Math interventionists.

How is Academic Intervention Delivered?

Academic intervention is delivered in a variety of ways, depending on the tier of support a student requires. The support can take place within the classroom or in an alternate environment. Tier 2 intervention will take place in small group (3 - 6 students) and Tier 3 will be one-to-one support.

What is the Frequency and Duration of Intervention?

The frequency of intervention is determined by tier that students are placed in.  Intervention sessions range from 2 - 5 times per week, for approximately 20 minutes per session. Targeted intervention programming runs for 6 - 8 weeks. Progress is monitored during this time to determine continuation or release from targeted support. Participation in academic support is fluid, therefore, students may enter and exit the program throughout the year.
